Ripley's Believe It or Not: Team Fortress 2 gets Alien: Isolation items

In the long list of things that the Alien series is known for, there are three things that rise to the top - elements that, if they didn’t exist, would make the films - and subsequently Alien: Isolation - less impactful.

There’s the terror-inducing, nightmarish claustrophobia; the purposefully uncomfortable sexual overtones; and, of course, Team Fortress 2 hats. Yesterday number three would have been reserved for Ripley’s awesome perm, but no longer.

Team Fortress 2's first community-made merchandise goes on sale

Less than a month ago, Valve dissolved the boundaries of the Team Fortress 2 Workshop. Formerly the preserve of intangible weapons and menswear for the discerning in-game avatar, the Workshop now hosts designs for physical merchandise - the best of which have already been cherry-picked for production by Valve’s partners in their new venture, WeLoveFine.

Valve get the builders in to rework Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's Cobblestone

Did you know? Counter-Strike: Global Offensive celebrated its second birthday a couple of weeks back. Its community workshop is more active than ever, and 409,000 watched the ESL-One Cologne grand finals last month.

Valve are determined to fix the unbroken, however. Cobblestone is a CS:GO map scarcely six months old, but it’s had some major work done.

Left 4 Dead 2 finally released uncensored in Australia

Left 4 Dead 2 has become a gently-rotting poster child for Australian game censorship in the past five years. Oz’s famously conservative ratings board rendered one of the best PC first-person shooters almost completely bloodless, and spirited away the bodies of the dead often before they had time to hit the Georgian dirt.

Valve appealed the board’s refusal to classify Left 4 Dead 2’s original version in 2009 - but only now, half a decade on, has it been approved for distribution in the region.

Dota 2 to receive long awaited Techies update next week; we're all doomed

The update that everyone’s been waiting for over four years is just one week away from becoming a reality. The “Techies" update isn’t only promising a new hero - which is one of the most infamous heroes in the game - but a slew of other features. The madness of All Random Deathmatch is making its debut along with a new All-Hero challenge, egging you on to win a match with each and every hero in Dota 2. And we’ll also see the introduction of the compendium stretch goals, such as new music and ballsy taunt gem.

Oh, and don’t forget the bug fixes too.

Valve's going up against an Australian watchdog in court over its refund policy

Australia and video games don’t have the most ammicable of relationships. Actually, that’s probably a bit unfair. I mean, I doubt Ayers Rock has an issue with games, and I suspect that most people don’t consider them dangerous. But some people of influence do, which is why developers sometimes end up jumping through hoops so they can sell their games over there.

Now an Australian consumer watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, has Valve in its sights. The group is suing Valve over its refund policy, which it claims breaks the country’s consumer laws.

More changes are coming to Steam, including ominous groups of curators

Steam sleuths SteamDB spotted an update Valve pushed through the Steam Translation Server today, and it confirms some of the big changes coming to the store.

They are meaty additions, like personalised front pages, a better search tool, changes to tabs and the introduction of curators, which seems to app features from social networks.

Everybody panic: Steam is different

Help. The Steam beta client is an altered beast today, in a hundred small ways. It’s disorientating, as if somebody has changed the colour of all our toothbrushes, or relocated the cereal cupboard an inch to the left. Let’s try and get our bearings, shall we?

Well-thumbed: the Steam Controller has grown an analog stick

The Steam Controller, as it was first pitched to us, was a totally alien way to play a game. Two flat radar dishes, resembling the subwoofers in the back of a an 18-year-old’s car, represented the promise of mouse-controlled games on the couch. A touch screen at its centre stood in quiet tribute to the Dreamcast. Possibly.

Nowadays it looks much more familiar. Four Xbox port-friendly letters sit below the Steam Controller's pause button, and a thumbstick - a new addition - in place of the last prototype’s d-pad.

NewBee wins the 2014 Dota 2 International

NewBee have beaten ViCi Gaming in the Dota 2 International 2014 grand finals for a total of over $5 million dollars. The Chinese team have had a rollercoaster of a tournament: only last week they were fighting elimination from the playoffs. But since then they stormed through the brackets to secure their place in the grand final on day one of the main event.

The first place prize ensures that each player will receive at least one million dollars each, and automatically places them as the highest earning eSport players in the world.

ESPN2's coverage of the Dota 2 International is just too much for some viewers

The growth of eSports, you could assume, has laid to rest the tired old arguments of what constitutes a sport and how Dota 2 or League of Legends don’t fit the bill. There are fewer and fewer things that separate traditional sports and eSports, and the latter becomes more like the former every year.

It looks like there are still plenty of folk who aren’t ready for eSports to be considered real sports, however. And there are quite a few who are genuinely outraged, because outrage is a compelling hobby. The Dota 2 International has been airing on ESPN2, and people have taken to Twitter to express just how devastating this is.

The Dota 2 International grand finals are tonight; final prize pool $10,931,105

The Dota 2 International 2014 grand finals are here. Sixteen teams have battled over the past two weeks to have a shot at the Aegis of Champions, and with it a slice of just under $11 million dollars; the winner of which will take home over $5 million. The mammoth best of five is between two Chinese teams: ViCi Gaming and NewBee. It’ll mark the first International where fan favourites Na’Vi have not made it to the finals.

The broadcast is starting right now over on Twitch, and you won’t want to miss it for the world.
