When turn-based strategists watched Ubisoft pull a DVD case out of Might and Magic Heroes VII’s Collector’s Edition during a Twitch unboxing, they not-unreasonably expected that their own copies might include a disc too. Instead, North American fans who pulled back the cardboard doors of their faux-stone boxes on launch day found a figurine, art book and tarot cards, but only an empty space where a DVD case might be expected to sit.

It seems Ubisoft had at some point altered their Collector’s Edition advertising to show that a digital copy of the game would be included rather than a disc. But those who’d pre-ordered didn’t even get a Uplay code, and were forced to submit a support ticket to access their download.
The publishers initially refused refunds, but have since seen sense.
“Ubisoft regrets any confusion created by the marketing materials from our Might and Magic Heroes VII Collector’s Edition,” the M&M team wrote in a statement. “We understand that some customers in North America were not aware the Collector’s Edition delivered digital versions of the game and soundtrack. Ubisoft apologizes for any frustration and disappointment resulting from these items being in digital format vs. physical format.”
Ubi will now accept complete refunds from any upset owners, and compensate all US Collector’s Edition players with a free game: Far Cry 4, Assassin’s Creed Rogue, The Crew, Toy Soldiers or Zombi.
