Wasn’t it already: EA’s Origin store is going digital only on April 4

Falling skyscrapers: now digital-only on Origin.

Did you know that Origin did boxed games? Probably not. Well, good news for the purpose of keeping your brain free of extraneous information: it no longer does.

If the existence of a boxy Battlefield 4 on EA’s store is news to you, you’re not alone. In a post entitled ‘A Fond Farewell to Discs!’, Origin reported that only 1 in every 100 users made use of its capacity to sell physical editions of EA games.

Consequently, they’ve decided that the entire Origin game store will be composed exclusively from digital downloads for PC and Mac beginning early next month.

“What does this mean for you? If you’re among 99% of our users, absolutely nothing. Your shopping experience hasn’t changed one single bit,” wrote the Origin team.

“But if you’re that 1% who still desires a physical collection, we want to let you know that Origin won’t be able to fulfill that need beginning April 4th. We’ll still be here when you transition your gaming habits to the wonders of digital downloads.”

Origin’s reasons for the transition are familiar: digital is “fast and convenient”, and enables them to give buyers the “best experience”. When was the last time you lot bought a boxed PC game?
