World of Tanks update 9.3 rolls in new light tanks, Stronghold features and more

Wargaming have supplemented World of Tanks with even more tanks - introducing several new light tanks including the likes of the US T37 and German Spahpanzer Ru 251. If you’re not a tank expert, don’t worry: there’s also other features. Strongholds Skirmishes can now be participated without having to join a clan. There’s also an update to the in-game rules, which should help stave off “unsportsmanship behaviour" around the battlefield.

Kislyi Kart: World of Tanks is getting a limited-time-only race mode

Tracked vehicles are designed and built for very particular tasks, but goshdarnit if Wargaming aren’t determined to use them for every possible purpose. There’s a persistent games industry rumour that CEO Victor Kislyi takes an Aufklärungspanzer Panther to the supermarket. And he's greenlit this: a rally racing mode for bulky online shooter World of Tanks.

World of Tanks 9.2 introduces clan strongholds and a new map for dastardly snipers

World of Tanks’ 9.2 update has rolled out, shooting out new clan features, HD tank models to make the tank on tank warfare a wee bit prettier, and new versions of existing maps like Sacred Valley and Hidden Village. Wargaming says that the focus of these map changes are strategy and balance.

A "newly imagined combat territory" has been thrown into the mix to boot: Fiery Salient, complete with raised train tracks and a snipers perch for those dastardly long-range killers.

Surviving the World Cup doldrums with World of Tanks: Football Edition

I’m one of those miserable sods who gets a lot more pleasure out of moaning about the World Cup than watching it. So I was more surprised than anyone that I found myself very happy that this competition of footballs and men in shorts was bringing me no small amount of joy. And it’s all thanks to World of Tanks and the game’s temporary football mode

For the last few days, I’ve been ramming an oversized football around a well-trimmed pitch. In a tank. It’s the most I’ve ever enjoyed the sport. And it’s provided some of my favourite World of Tanks moments.

Tank shoots, it scores: World of Tanks gets a World Cup mode

Football is a sport that seems to be rather popular. If you’re an American reader, you’ll inexplicably know it as soccer. I’m constantly being informed that the World Cup is a thing, and is also a rather big deal. Which is a shame, because it’s also run by FIFA, which is essentially a super villain group.

It might already be clear that I don’t care much for the sport (and it has nothing to do with Scotland being terrible at it). But I have been known to dabble in tank warfare. What do the two have in common? In a sane universe, not very much. But nobody has accused Wargaming of being sane. They’ve only gone and added a new football mode to World of Tanks.

Wargaming's US and European director reveals the key to free-to-play success on PC: patience

Victor Kislyi may be Wargaming’s CEO, but Frederic Menou oversees the largest domain in the company - North America, Europe, the Middle-East and Africa. He knows his stuff - and the stuff he’s made of, apparently, is patience.

Menou says free-to-play developers need to allow a “certain amount of time before monetisation" if they have a hope of replicating World of Tanks’ success.

PC games revenue has now "surpassed" that of console games. MOBAs were involved

The PC games market is very big and complicated. There are lots of numbers to add up - and publishers won’t tell us what all of them are. But the analysts at DFC Intelligence reckon that PC games have now overtaken their console equivalents in terms of revenue.

“Among core gamers there is a heavy overlap with most console gamers also playing on a PC," said DFC owner David Cole. “The big difference is that consoles are now the luxury item and PCs are the necessity."

What I learned about Polish tanks at the Polish tank museum.

I’ve just returned from a brief visit to Poland to watch the World of Tanks grand finals. There were a lot of tanks. And we will be writing all about those tanks shortly.

In between seeing virtual tanks, my host arranged for a very special surprise: Polish tanks!

I don’t speak Polish so the details of what my Polish guide told me on the tour of Warsaw’s Museum of Polish Military Technology may have been lost on me.

I think I got the gist of it though. The Polish army have been allowing old tanks to retire to a field outside the capital where they can spend the last of their days playing in the field, cared for by a team of professionals who have the elderly tanks purring and (largely) happy.

Here is that gist.

With pictures.

World of Warplanes is 10% as popular as World of Tanks - but Wargaming are "very happy"

Four years ago, Wargaming released World of Tanks - and subsequently began expanding in a fashion that positively encouraged lazy invasion metaphor. Their armour rolled across continents and set up new outposts in each. Their troops parachuted into North America - capturing Chris Taylor’s Gas Powered Games and MechAssault types Day 1.

In that time, they’ve also made another game: World of Warplanes. But tracked vehicles, not winged ones, continue to fund the overwhelming majority of the company’s enlargement.

It turns out Wargaming are fine with that.

World of Tanks will even the playing field for 2014

World of Tanks has come a long way since its inception, but 2014 looks to be quite a game-changer for the free-to-play game. Wargaming is developing some notable improvements to the game, with a great focus on wrestling away the dominance the big clans have on the game, and evening the playing field so smaller, less experienced clans can still have fun without inevitable defeats.

New game modes are the way forward for Wargaming’s plan, and a whole host of new abilities that means your tank isn’t the only thing to rely on in battle.

World of Tanks' average players spend three times as much as League of Legends players

Numbers, eh? Can’t live with ‘em - the angular limbs of ‘4’ and ‘7’ in particular would make bedtime a nightmare. But they can be absolutely fascinating. Take, for instance, the average revenue per user in the PC’s top free-to-play games. Can you guess how much people tend to spend in Dota 2, compared to LoL? Or in TF2 compared to Planetside?

World of Tanks now has 80 million accounts - and its eSports scene is real

Tracked vehicles have rarely entered into eSports since Counter-Strike practically invented the idea in the late ‘90s. That’s possibly because nothing about mile-long lines of stationary armour says ‘fast-paced teamwork’.

World of Tanks might be changing that. Less a historical sim than an approachable competitive shooter, the game has merited a $10m investment in eSports from its creators, Wargaming. And their community have answered.

Let's get physical: World of Tanks video teases upside down tanks, more destruction and flying turrets

Wargaming’s World of Tanks is set to become increasingly more complex and realistic as 2014 moves forward. The tanks vs. tanks wargame already realistically models things like tank armour, shell penetration and a plethora of other details that demand players pay attention, but now the in-game physics is getting a major overhaul.

The developer has put together a diary explaining all the upcoming changes. Expect crumbling buildings, flipping tanks and flying turrets.

End of an e-ra: World Cyber Games halt tournaments and events after 14 years in eSports

This year, World Cyber Games Inc. won’t be running any tournaments and events, including the World Cyber Games finals in Kunshan - for the first time in 14 years.

This is no Glastonbury-style break to let the sticky convention hall floors recover and the Counter-Strike pros graze for a few months, sadly. Rather, it’s the moment we “say goodbye to the WCG".

Russia went World of Tanks mad on Sunday, with over a million concurrent players on the Russian cluster

World of Tanks has more than a few fans worldwide, but it's in Russia where the online tank-on-tank extravaganza has its most ardent fans. Last year WoT set a new record for most concurrent players in one server, a Russian one of course, with over 190,000 players in Russia fighting each other.

Back then Wargaming boasted a peak concurrent user figure of over 800,00 in Russia alone, but as of January 19th, it's smashed that figure into the ground, presumably with a tank shell.

World of Tanks 8.10 update will augment Japanese armour, introduce "major overhaul" to lighting

During World War II, tanks like the Type 95 Ha-Gō were seen only on the Pacific Front. But in Wargaming.net’s flagship game, Japanese tanks meet Russian tracked guns meet British armour in impossible deathmatches - an unfeasible tribute to the 20th century’s most memorable machines.

At the even hazier edge of the game’s heavy metal fantasy are the prototypes: the tanks that were never fielded. For update 8.10, welcome the Type 5 Ke-Ho and friends.

Wargaming have gone from nothing to everything in the space of a couple of years. World of Tanks is massively popular and certainly providing the Cyprus-based developer with a strong financial backbone. Strong enough to support another developer it would seem. GamesBeat are reporting that Wargaming are bankrolling a new start-up based in Seattle.
