World of Warcraft loses 1.1 million subscribers; dips to 9.1 million worldwide

Activision Blizzard’s latest earning call has just revealed that World of Warcraft’s subscriber base has taken a significant tumble, dropping 1.1 million subscribers in the past three months.

During the call, Blizzard’s executives noted that 10 million copies of Diablo 3 have been sold, of which 1.2 million came with the annual pass offer. That’s lead to an increase of 6.9 million users on Battle.net, from 10 million before the game launched.

That subscription drop has got to hurt a even if, as the publishers pointed out, the losses stem from the East, where the business model isn’t quite as profitable. Blizzard put the loss down to the high sales of Diablo 3, and from players waiting for the next Mists of Pandaria release date to hit.
