Should you buy Nvidia GTX Turing GPUs?

Nvidia’s new mainstream graphics cards have arrived. The 16-series GTX Turing cards offer gaming performance without the ray tracing chops, or sky-high price, of the RTX 20-series. But should the parsimonious PC gamer (that’s you) drop cash-money on one?

Nvidia GTX 1650

The unwanted third child of the 16-series sports a price/performance ratio not even its parents love. And you can blame AMD’s RX 570. The aging Radeon was built in bulk after the GPU mining boom, and there’s a lot of them left.

The RX 570 costs less than the GTX 1050 the new card is replacing, so who should buy the GTX 1650? Well, the GTX 1650 needs no external power, making it the best drop-in upgrade for any basic office PC without a GPU.

Nvidia GTX 1660

The GTX 1660 had one mission… to kill AMD’s Polaris graphics cards. It parachuted into the market at a price designed to take out the RX 580 and RX 590. And, with almost the same specs as a GTX 1660 Ti, it’s succeeded.

The only problem is that it’s not really bringing much new to the table. It’s not really capable of ray tracing, so anyone with a mid-range card of yesteryear has little tangible reason to upgrade to a GTX 1660 today.

Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti

At under $300, this is our favourite graphics card around today. Sure the RTX 2080 Ti is the fastest, but most of us can’t spend $350 - $500 on an entry-level RTX card, let alone $1,200 on the top GPU.

The GTX 1660 Ti beats all the competing AMD cards and offers GTX 1070-level gaming performance for an unprecedented price… unless you can find a cheap GTX 1070 hidden at the back of an etailers’ virtual shelf, we’d recommend plumping for this one!

AMD Navi

AMD is set to launch its next-gen Navi range of GPUs before the end of September, and is laser-focused on pricing. You can be pretty sure Navi will arrive skewering the price and performance of the current GTX Turing cards.

Should you wait for Navi, then? Honestly, no. If you want a new GPU today, buy a new GPU today. Such is the way with PC hardware that there is always something shiny and new just over the horizon.
