If you like your videogame stories told with fewer words and more through beautiful environments then pay attention to Aporia: Beyond the Valley, which comes out today.
It's a first-person puzzle-adventure that sees you waking up among the ruins of a deserted civilisation. The idea is to explore the lands around you to uncover the mystery of what happened there. But you do this purely through observation - there's no narration, and there aren't even any diaries scattered around the place that tell the tale.
Aporia started life out as an experiment in storytelling in games by Danish studio Investigate North. It's since been backed by The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo producer, Ole Søndberg, and is now a full-fledged game that hopes to pave the way for telling Nordic stories in videogames.
You can expect to find strange occurances of nature, ancient technology, and to occasionally be haunted by a spirit roaming the fog-covered forest. It's a place of dark beauty, but more than that, there are puzzles to solve across the landscape that bring you closer to finding the answers you seek.
