There’s a Torment game in development at Brian Fargo’s inXile, but it’s not set in Planescape

torment-inxile.

Brian Fargo and his team at inXile are in the process of reviving a second much-loved but short-lived CRPG series: Planescape Torment. Only this Torment is set elsewhere – the Numenera Universe, expensively Kickstarted last year by one of Planescape’s designers, Monte Cook.

Cook is joined on the project by several other key parties involved in developing the original game. No mention yet of Chris Avellone, who’s committed to design a chunk of Wasteland 2 for inXile, but is and likely will remain a cornerstone and founder member of Obsidian.

There’s an excerpt from an imminent RPS interview, and it reads like a striking manifesto:

“We won’t have faeries or devils, but we’ll have diabolical creatures from far dimensions with schemes beyond human imagination. We won’t have gods, but we’ll have creatures who have lived for millennia with the powers of creation and destruction at their fingertips, with abilities honed over countless lifetimes. We won’t have other planes per se, but we’ll have pathways to hostile worlds and bizarre landscapes and ancient machines that catapult the players into places where the ordinary laws of nature no longer apply.”

Blimey, crikey and cripes. I think inXile might be turning into something like that refuge for ailing opera singers in the new Dustin Hoffman flick. The opera singers are great, expansive RPGs. Planescape is Michael Gambon. Wasteland 2 is Billy Connolly, natch.

Anyway. What’s your view on all this?
