Here’s how to unlock Bayek in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Bayek joins your ship crew in Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Assassin’s Creed got a soft reboot with Origins last year, and that’s how we all came to know and love Bayek. The Siwan Medjay murdered his way into our hearts, but since this year’s Odyssey takes place centuries earlier, it seemed he wouldn’t make a return – but anachronism be damned, Bayek is now a recruitable crew member.

As with most other timeline-breaking recruitment options in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Bayek comes as part of a Ubisoft Club promotion. He’s yours for the bargain price of 40 Units, Ubisoft’s punily-named meta currency. You can collect that pretty quickly through standard achievements – you get 10 Units each for completing episodes in the main story, which should be your best bet at a low level.

Bayek will become a lieutenant, who you can equip from your ship menu. He’ll provide bonuses including +9% to rower stamina, +9% fire power when ramming, and +15 rower stamina refill when cleaving – perfect if you like to smash opponents at sea. As with any lieutenant, he’ll also join you in melee when you board an enemy vessel.

It’s a bit easier to get Bayek than it is to unlock Evie, who requires a whole lot of Ubisoft Club XP across the Assassin’s Creed franchise to pick up. Those are both solid picks among AC protagonists, but it remains a bit odd we can’t pick Edward for our crew – he does have plenty of boating experience, after all.
