New Battlefield 5 trailer teases battle royale mode

The new promo ends with a glimpse of players becoming engulfed in a ring of fire in a hint towards the game’s newest mode.

A new trailer for Battlefield has dropped just in time for Gamescom, and the hype has been dialed up to 11.

The trailer, dubbed Devastation of Rotterdam gives players a glimpse of the partially-destroyed Dutch city, tank combat, and destructible environments, all rendered beautifully in DICE’s Frostbite engine and soundtracked by a ‘gritty’ cover of The Animals’ classic song House of the Rising Sun. These sequences are most likely pulled from the game’s ‘War Story’ campaign which was shown off at E3 back in June.

What is sure to turn the most heads, is the trailer’s closing 20 seconds, which appears to give us the first hint towards the battle royale mode which has been confirmed to be coming to the game.

If the tease is to be believed, Battlefield’s take on the trendy genre looks to be on a greater scale than anything we have yet seen. The tease depicts a sprawling environment, surrounded by mountains, complete with tanks and destructible buildings. Instead of being drawn in by fog, it looks like players will become encircled by an apocalyptic ring of fire as the area of play shrinks. Now if that doesn’t get you going, I don’t know what will.

Yesterday, it emerged via a market report that the pre-order figures for Battlefield 5 have fallen short of other Holiday releases such as Red Dead Redemption 2, and Black Ops 4 (which of course, features it’s own battle royale game mode). The game has also caught flak from a vocal minority of internet trolls critiquing the inclusion of a female protagonist.
