When is the Beast of Reincarnation release date? Game Freak has broken free from The Pokemon Company once again, but we've never seen anything quite like this before. While the Japanese developer has produced original platformers, puzzlers, and card games over the years, Beast of Reincarnation is a very different, well, beast.
Beast of Reincarnation is an action RPG game that appears to follow FromSoftware's soulslike formula. According to Game Freak, it boasts "demanding, technical combat" that resembles the cadence of Sekiro's dodges and parries, set in a post-apocalyptic vision of Japan reclaimed by nature. Here's everything you need to know to prepare for the Beast of Reincarnation release date next year.
Beast of Reincarnation release date
Beast of Reincarnation will release in summer 2026. It'll be available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Game Pass day one.
This release date window was confirmed during the Xbox Developer Direct livestream in January 2026, which included a Beast of Reincarnation showcase led by Game Freak general producer Shigeru Ohmori. He describes it as "a new challenge born from Game Freak's own initiative called Gear Project."
Codenamed Project Bloom, Game Freak's upcoming action-adventure game was officially announced during the Xbox Showcase 2025. The reveal trailer was accompanied by a statement from Fictions, Beast of Reincarnation's publisher.
"It's incredible to be working with Game Director Furushima-san and the renowned development team at Game Freak," executive producer Mika Kurasawa said. "We are so excited to show players a glimpse into the stunning world and intense combat of Beast of Reincarnation."

Beast of Reincarnation story
Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke is an obvious inspiration for Beast of Reincarnation's story, as protagonist Emma embarks on a journey across post-apocalyptic Japan with canine companion Koo by her side. The voiceover in the reveal trailer describes the emergence of a corrupted Malefact that blighted the natural world, much like the Tatari Gami in Hayao Miyazaki's animated film.
However, while Princess Mononoke is set in Japan's Muromachi period, Beast of Reincarnation transports us to the year 4026. According to a Japanese VO in the reveal trailer, we're just in time to witness humanity's "inevitable extinction." Our mysterious doomsayer doesn't divulge whether this extinction is due to the blight, but it appears humanity is as afflicted by it as the natural world.

Like Ghibli's San, Emma is an outcast, though for very different reasons. She is reviled as a Blighted One, and judging by the flowering vines that sprout from her hair, it's safe to say Emma's connection to nature runs deeper than the rest of humanity. While we're not quite sure that Beast of Reincarnation will reach the emotional heights of Neva, the cutscenes that bookend its action-oriented gameplay already prove that there's more to this RPG than plunging a sword into a raging beast and calling it a day.
Emma is a Sealer with the power to destroy the titular beast of reincarnation - but isn't that an odd title? After all, reincarnation promises life after death. It's also closely related to the central tenet of Buddhism, a major religion in Japan. We've seen developers from the region explore Buddhist and Shinto beliefs before, most notably in Okami, The Legend of Zelda, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. After the reveal trailer, we expect that Beast of Reincarnation will follow similar themes.
Director and writer Kota Furushima describes Beast of Reincarnation as "a mix of warmth, trust, and loneliness," but Emma and Koo aren't entirely alone. Brad and Kagura are a pair of unlikely allies, and they're destined to cross paths with Kunai, a mysterious warrior with a Malefact companion of her own.

Beast of Reincarnation gameplay
Beast of Reincarnation is a story-driven RPG, but there's no question that its combat takes a front seat. Emma's weapon of choice is a lightweight katana, which she uses to slash, parry, and deflect blows. Paired with the high-fidelity visuals, it's easy to draw a parallel with the award-winning Black Myth Wukong.
We even caught a glimpse of Emma using her blight powers to grapple up a monster to reach its weak point, in a move that's similar to Sekiro's prosthetic. These powers extend to rudimentary platforming, letting Emma manipulate her vine-like hair to traverse gaps and ascend high walls.
This verticality should make combat and exploration more dynamic, especially when paired with Shadow of the Colossus-style set pieces against massive bosses known as Nushi. These gigantic Malefacts have been completely consumed in a Blighted Forest, and Emma must defeat them to absorb their powers.

Perhaps the most intriguing curveball for Beast of Reincarnation's gameplay is its director. Kota Furushima is best known for his work on the battle systems in Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon and Pokemon Sword/Shield. We've seen how his experience with turn-based RPGs translates into real-time combat via Koo.
Emma is a dab hand with a katana, but there's no doubt that Koo is a fierce and valuable ally. Successful parries charge Koo's Blooming Arts abilities, which in turn can synergize with Emma's sword techniques. Skill trees, attributes, and equipment all play an important part in enhancing the duo's efficacy in battle, from raw damage to special attacks that inflict stagger and burn effects.

Ken reckons that Beast of Reincarnation could be the Monster Hunter rival we've all been waiting for. However, we can't ignore the various automatons that appear in the reveal trailer, from spindly androids to hulking armored brutes. It appears Beast of Reincarnation even has a dismemberment system that could help to take them down, as Emma hacks off their robotic limbs.
That's everything we know about Beast of Reincarnation ahead of its release date. The best games like Monster Hunter can help you get set to take on the big beasties that await. Alternatively, take a look at the best PC games and story games if you're looking for a gaming experience to remember.
