Besiege Review

How gory is Besiege?

It's bloody, but in that hilarious cartoon sense. Driving over sheep and soldiers squishes them in a cloud of blood, whilst swinging a windmill-like blade at them will catapult them across the map with a read smear. Don't expect to see any dismemberment or guts though; this is just silly fun.

How funny is Besiege?

92

1214 days ago

Exceptionally funny. You can categorise it into two fields; the hilarity of failure and the laughs of victory. Building something insane, like a stampeding robot or a 100-gun pirate ship, will lead to fun regardless of if it obliterates the enemy in a cloud of blood and debris, or catches fire and explodes.

How fun is it to smash things in Besiege?

92

1214 days ago

So far Besiege's smashable targets are simple and small. A few houses, a simple castle, and a wall are about the only things you'll find. But colliding into them with a heavy-hitting barrage tank, or demolishing them with a perfectly thrown bomb is always good fun. It's not really the satisfaction of seeing it collapse that's the point, but the journey it takes to get there.

How much freedom does Besiege give you?

92

1214 days ago

It depends on the mode. When playing the missions, you can use any component you want as many times as you feel its needed with no restriction. The only thing you can't do is build outside the box, which limits you to a certain size (although you can still build something sizeable with the lines). Playing on Free Mode allows you total freedom to go as nuts as you like, at the cost of not being able to complete missions.

Have you come up with any clever strategies in Besiege?

92

1214 days ago

I'm a dunderhead and so engineering isn't my strong suite, meaning I've not discovered anything all that clever. Head to YouTube, however, and you'll find a vast menu of tutorials showing you how to make incredible things like a crane that can be controlled to reload a catapult, a ballistics with a gravity-fed magazine, and even airships.

How realistic is Besiege?

92

1214 days ago

Not realistic at all, but it does have some science going on in the background. Forces affect your machine, so put too much weight on something and it can break, cause too much pressure and beams may snap. Thus you have to consider the construction of your machine carefully; make sure things are braces so they're not wobbly, but not over-braced in case it becomes brittle. Physics affect projectiles and momentum, which may be important depending on the weapon you're building.

How hard are the puzzles in Besiege?

92

1214 days ago

Not particularly. Each objective can be tricky if you've not managed to get the hang of Besiege's mechanics and engineering elements, but when you're familiar with them each task is fairly simple, provided you've got the imagination required.

How good are Spiderling Studios at releasing regular updates?

92

1214 days ago

At time of writing the game has only been out a matter of weeks, but there have been four minor updates. Whilst it's impossible to predict what will come in the future, Spiderling have at least set a solid first impression.

Should you buy Besiege now or wait for it to come out of Early Access?

92

1214 days ago

No; this is one of the very few games that offers a distinct and fun experience despite only being in Alpha. If they decided to cap development now and sell only what's here for the tiny price tag it has, that would be fine. The fact that there's still potentially two years of development left on Besiege is exciting because that basically means lots of new content in the future. Buy now while it's cheap, play lots, and then play again as the game blooms and expands.

How good are the graphics in Besiege?

92

Besiege is fairly simple, but it's presented with astonishing polish. It looks beautiful, and the minimalistic art style with great patches of nothing add to its unique character. The components look chunky, providing that Lego feel when it comes to construction.

How good are the sounds in Besiege?

92

Amusingly Besiege's music is calm and serene; the kind of music you can imagine being played at low volume in the background of a physiotherapy session. It's a lovely juxtaposition to the chaos that you're actually causing.

How does Besiege run on your PC?

Besiege is pretty undemanding, and I've had it running fine on both a gaming PC and a work laptop. Don't expect to run into any problems.
