When is the Borderlands 4 release date? The Borderlands series dates back to 2009, when the first game was released to PC and consoles. Over the last 15 years, the series has become so popular that it was turned into a blockbuster movie in 2024 and, while that might have been met with a rather underwhelming reception, the franchise is set to continue with another videogame entry.
Confirmed during Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2024, Borderlands 4 is still relatively mysterious, as a one-minute cinematic reveal trailer for the action-adventure game is all we’ve got to go on so far. However, we can start to look forward to when the Borderlands 4 release date might be, and what it could entail.
Borderlands 4 release date estimate
The Borderlands release date is set for sometime in 2025, as confirmed in the official teaser trailer above. Based on previous release dates in the series, we could guess that Borderlands 4 to land in September or October 2025.
The original release dates for both Borderlands and Borderlands 3 were in October, while the Borderlands 2 release was in September. Naturally, given that Borderlands 4 was only announced in the second half of 2024, we probably wouldn’t expect the game to land in early 2025. It stands to reason, then, that the latest game in the series would follow the same trend as those previous games, and will see a release date in September or October 2025.
Borderlands 4 will be released on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Borderlands 4 trailers
So far, the reveal trailer at the top of this page is the only Borderlands 4 trailer we have seen, and was shown at the start of Gamescom ONL on August 21, 2024. This trailer features no gameplay, and only shows the planet Pandora, with its purple glowing ravines, moving through space, and plummeting into another, much larger, planet.
The other most notable thing from the trailer is that we see the Firehawk sigil right at the start of the clip, which suggests that the story unsurprisingly takes off where Borderlands 3 finished – with the team looking up at a Firehawk-branded moon.
Further into the trailer, a large meteorite from the collision falls to the ground, and in the aftermath, a mechanical hand leans in to pick up a Psycho mask from the ground as the short trailer comes to an end. Eagle-eyed viewers have spotted that the vault symbol perfectly aligns on a face in the trailer, with the scarring on Handsome Jack’s face – could this be a hint that the Borderlands series isn’t finished with Handsome Jack just yet?
Borderlands 4 story
What the trailer tells us about the Borderlands 4 story so far, as we mention above, is that we take off at some point after the end of Borderlands 3, where the current team of Vault Hunters and Crimson Raiders mourn the death of one one of their allies (trying to avoid spoilers here just in case), as they look upon the remnants of her sacrifice.
If you are looking to play or replay Borderlands 3 before the launch of the fourth game, we won’t say too much more, but we will say that the team have been exploring Pandora and the Great Vault located there. Having found the Great Vault before the end of Borderlands 3, the team could go anywhere from here, but we’re sure we’ll see more in the way of trailers and teasers between now and the Borderlands 4 release date.
While we wait for those further details on the Borderlands 4 release date and the game itself, take a look at more of the Gamescom 2024 announcements, including the Starfield DLC release date, or take a look at all of the upcoming games we’re looking forward to in 2024 and beyond.
