Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Review

Is Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel grindy?

At some point, if you want to become the best equipped you can and do the raids and become outfitted with the best legendary items, yes its going to be a slog. The good news is that you can play through the game a couple times with a character, even reaching the level cap, with little grinding. At high levels you might find yourself for want of a go-to weapon, but this feels reduced from 2, many quests provide fine equipment for you.

How good an FPS is Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel?

Yes, the character abilities are much more dynamic than before and the addition of double jumps and butt-slams gives you a greater mobility that feels very natural. They both enhance the gameplay a lot.

How fair are loot drops in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel?

You are going to be fighting bosses if you want legendaries or a good supply of purples, thats just the way the system works. Legendary items are going to feel rare, and if you are the kind of person that has to have specific ones it might feel unfair. If you aren't so focused on min-maxing I think it feels pretty fair.

Does Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel allow for a good range of character builds?

Above and beyond most other talent tree based games. There are a large array of options, and most traits are pretty useful. The biggest issue to diversity is just the huge number of points you will get. If you are going to the level cap with all the DLC, you are more going to be choosing the abilities you won't take than what you will. Still, there is a lot of nuance and each character has several playstyles for you to mix and match between.

How open is Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel to explore?

The game has a smaller geography than Borderlands 2, which is one of its biggest disappointments. Still, the areas are pretty open and have a decent number of secrets lying around in the form of chests, achievements and audio logs.

How much fun are the weapons in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel?

Everything feels solid, but the average gun doesn't have too much impact behind it. When you get a bit further and are using elemental weapons and special weapons it feels more impressive. Without your abilities and the crazier guns, it would be a bit bland, but the total package is a lot of fun.

How funny is Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel?

Overall pretty good, the Australian references get a grin, and it can be pretty clever. The characters remain endearing in their own way, especially now that player characters actually talk to get some character. Some of the weaker meme references have been culled, but there are still a few groan worthy jokes. There are also some moments where the writing can be pretty hamhanded.

Would you buy at full price or wait for a Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel sale?

I would suggest a sale. The game and all its DLC tally up to 90USD right now which... is too much. Its fun but not nearly worth that. Wait for it on sale. Of the DLC, both characters are fun and Claptastic Journey is one of the best DLC in the series (Easy worth the 10USD price), but the holodome is severely lacking. It feels like there should have been more.

Not the most impressive on a technical level, but it works well stylistically. Some of the locations, especially in Claptastic Voyage, are gorgeous and just well designed.

How good are the sounds in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel?

Very, the music is very fitting for the moon, voices are well done and the guns are all well represented. Character voices add a bit of extra personality that was lacking in 2.

Each of the characters has a unique playstyle that adds a lot of replay-ability. Its also good fun with friends, one of the best co-op titles around.
