Not content to fill Death Stranding with bizarre cameos from across the game and film industries, Hideo Kojima himself has now begun to appear in other games. He’s got a cameo in Remedy’s mind-bender Control, and it’s just as weird as you’d hope and expect from this particular meeting of the minds.
Kojima doesn’t actually appear in-game, but he and Kojima Productions’ head of marketing, Aki Saito, provide voiceover for one of the Control’s many side missions. This one is called Dr. Yoshimi Tokui’s Guided Imagery Experience, and to access it, you’ll need to have reached the main story mission Old Boys’ Club, which gets you access to the Central Research sector.
In Central Research, you’ll find the Parapsychology area, and attached to that will be a room called the Extrasensory Lab. In there, you’ll find a collectible near a tank – grab it to start the mission. It’s pretty self-explanatory from there, but the mission will require you to head back out to the Ritual Division, which you can only do after speaking with Marshall.
What is Hideo Kojima’s cameo in Control?
If you don’t want to go to the trouble of digging into the mission for yourself, here’s the short version. Kojima is Dr. Yoshimi Tokui, and he’ll guide you – in Japanese – through a “guided imagery experience” where you’ll look at some trees, run around some forklifts, and learn about love. All the while, Saito provides translation as a nameless interpreter.
You can watch it all in the trailer above. As MP1ST notes, Kojima actually teased this earlier this year, when his publicist tweeted that the game director “managed to do some voice recording for the other Sam” – apparently Sam Lake.
People have already been combing Kojima’s tweets to figure out who else might appear in Death Stranding, but maybe the real question is what other games Kojima himself will appear in. So Half-Life 3 confirmed and Kojima is in it. (That’s a joke. It’s not true. Don’t cite me.)
