Counter-Strike: Source Review

How does Counter-Strike: Source reward you for playing tactically?

If you die in Counter-Strike then you have to sit out till the next round. If you run into gunfights you tend to die faster than the more tactical players. Playing tactically means you play longer.

Generally teams who play together tactically will last longer and have better performance. The core benefit to being tactical is victory; going lone wolf and spraying bullets everywhere is most likely to get you killed and force you to sit out the match.

No one plays tactically in this game anymore when I play. People are just bunny hopping and getting headshots all the time, or going to CS:GO

How realistic is Counter-Strike: Source?

Having been in many gunfights in my time as a counter-terrorist operative I'm going to say 'ish'. While the weapons are based on real world guns and the art style has aimed for realism, Counter-Strike is no simulation. You can kill another player with a couple of shots but they're ability doesn't diminish until they are dead. A player with 1hp can move as fast as a player with 100hp.

Also, I don't know if it's in the FBI handbook to holster your weapon and draw a knife if you want to run faster.

The guns look and sound sort-of real, but this is essentially a game of virtual paintball. With a focus on balanced and refined mechanics, everything operates in CS:S in order to create a better game, not a better simulation of real life.

I wouldn't know anything about real war, but it's not like Insurgency or Day of Infamy. I don't know why they do all the weird things like running with a grenade makes it go 50 feet away from where you were aiming, and some guns are just not accurate because of the spray pattern. I know this is a different game then all the other, but that is just the things that would be realistic

How good an FPS is Counter-Strike: Source?

Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

CS:S is a very focused game; its feature set is quite narrow, but by doing so it manages to hone its signature terrorist hunt game mode to perfection. With its 'dead and you're out' approach, making a kill feels meaningful, and that's the sign of a great shooter.

How much fun are the weapons in Counter-Strike: Source?

Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

Whilst playing CS:S is fun and the hunt for other players is great, the actual act of shooting is fairly clinical. CS:S's weapons are digital killing tools, and lack the weight and kickback that's required to make using a virtual gun fun.

Does Counter-Strike: Source respect the military?

180
Julian Benson (after 1 day 10 hours play time)

It depends if the terrorist players are in a tea bagging mood.

With no narrative at all, CS:S neither does or doesn't respect the military. It's not a propaganda piece - military uniforms and weapons are just dress-up for what is essentially a bunch of people playing cowboys and indians.

How much freedom does Counter-Strike: Source give you?

On the surface Counter-Strike isn't a game about freedom, you play fast-paced matches on the same maps over and over again. All you can change about your character is the weapons you buy at the start of each round.

Yet the choices of weapons and the masterfully designed maps, which are shot through with crisscrossing routes, give me enough freedom of choice that I've played Counter-Strike Source on and off for more than a decade and not got bored yet.

How active is the PvP community in Counter-Strike: Source?

While you can play against bots the meat and bones of Counter-Strike is it's online PvP. And you will never be short of a game. It could be 4am on Christmas morning and you will find servers full of players.

How does Counter-Strike: Source reward teamplay?

180
Julian Benson (after 1 day 10 hours play time)

1031 days ago

The game doesn't reward teamplay, you aren't given points or achievements for sticking near other players, and you can't heal each other or share ammo. But, a team that plays together will, most the time, wipe out the opposition. Which certainly feels rewarding.

Although, you will see players occasionally stacking on top of each other to reach sniper spots. So in that sense there is some teamplay.

Would you buy at full price or wait for a Counter-Strike: Source sale?

180
Julian Benson (after 1 day 10 hours play time)

1031 days ago

When side by side, it's cheaper to get Counter-Strike: Global Offensive at full price then Counter-Strike: Source, so buy CS:GO. If Source is on sale and GO isn't, buy Source, it's just as good.

Is Counter-Strike: Source fun to watch?

89
Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

1030 days ago

Yes. With its 'die-and-you're-out' system, you'll be watching from the sidelines the moment you're fragged, but thankfully watching the game is as tense and thrilling as actually playing it.

How good are the graphics in Counter-Strike: Source?

89
Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

As one of the Source engine's launch games, CS:S is naturally looking very old these days. Flat textures, lower polygon counts, and a lack of set-dressing makes CS:S feel the decade old that it is. That doesn't mean it's ugly; it just looks very much like a videogame.

How good are the sounds in Counter-Strike: Source?

89
Matt Purslow (after 2 hours play time)

1030 days ago

There's no subtlety or ambience to CS:S's sound: it's all entirely functional. This is actually a positive: by having clear and distinct sounds affected by distance, your ears are as much of a tool as your guns.
