What do you think gaming will look like in, ooh, let’s say 1000 years? Alright, that’s quite a lot to ask of you. But hey, you don’t have to imagine all it by yourself – developer Radical Fish Games has already done it with its new, retro-inspired 2D action-RPG CrossCode.
After several years of development and a successful crowdfunding effort, CrossCode is finished and available to buy on Steam – yep, right now. It has you play as Lea, a mute who ventures inside an MMO in the distant future – one in which your whole body and mind is sucked into, as if you’ve stepped into an entirely separate reality.
You have to help her explore this vast digital world and overcome the many challenges she faces. This includes puzzles, battles, figuring out which upgrades to go for, and dealing with annoying players. Hmm, seems like MMOs won’t be changing too much in the future, then.
One of the unique ideas in CrossCode is its bouncing ball mechanics. You aim and shoot these balls to unlock environments and deal damage to the cyborg crabs and head-banging meerkats that get in your way.
