Cuphead celebrates five million copies sold with a birthday sale

The amazingly-animated platformer is 20% off this week.

Cuphead came out two years ago today, and since then it’s gone on to sell a whopping five million copies. Studio MDHR announced the news today along with an announcement that the game will be discounted on all platforms as part of the double birthday/sales milestone celebration.

If you’re just tuning in, Cuphead is the bullet-hell action-platformer game about defeating a series of challenging bosses as the titular Cuphead. Along with his pal Mugman, Cuphead uses a combination of finger-guns and well-timed jumps to collect souls for the Devil, who runs the local casino.

Cuphead initially turned heads for its classic Fleischer Studios-style animation, hand drawn in the wiggly 1930s style that characterized the original Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons. Once it finally launched in 2017, players were taken in by its demanding gameplay and phenomenal soundtrack, which recently hit number one on the Billboard jazz charts.

The game’s popularity has also led to development of a Cuphead Netflix series, which will allow players to take in its hand-crafted style without the anxiety and frustration that comes with repeatedly dying to some errant bullet spewed by a pair of boxing frogs or a giant evil mermaid with an octopus on her head.

Studio MDHR produced a nice piece of Cuphead birthday art to go along with the announcements, which you can see in the tweet:

Birthday cake makes everyone get along so well, doesn’t it?

If you’re keen to join in on the celebration, you can find Cuphead on Steam or the Microsoft Store for 20% off this week, which puts it at $15.99 USD.
