Update: The migration has begun! You can now update your game to replace gross GfWL with Steamworks, and your save data and achievements will carry over. Make the switch before the transfer service ceases on February 16th, when the Steamworks version will become the default one. Take a look at the How To guide on Steam

Back in October FromSoftware announced plans to strip Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition of its Games For Windows Live integration. This would allow players to port their saves and achievements over to Steam, something they’ve not been able to access since Windows shuttered GFWL’s doors.

FromSoftware planned to have this process completed for release this month. It’s now been delayed into December.

“We are working hard to finalize the process to move your Dark Souls: Prepare to Die saves and achievements to Steam,” FromSoftware write. “We need to conduct additional testing and we are now targeting December to begin this process. We’ll have more information in the coming weeks. Thank you very much for your patience!”

The changes will allow players to redeem a free Steam copy of Dark Souls with a GFWL token, transfer their saves from GFWL to Steam but only for a short migration period. After that players will still be able to redeem their free copy of the game but they may not be able to transfer their saves.

FromSoftware aren’t saying how long the migration period will be, the details will come in the next few weeks.
