DayZ Review

There are lots of clones of DayZ appearing. Would you recommending sticking with DayZ, or play something similar?

Anything else. Don't give them any more money to waste

Pretty much every survival game at the moment is riddled with bugs, crashing all over the place, or suffering from some kind of awful design flaw. Whatever you play, it's going to be problematic. DayZ is in the 'top tier' of these games, and whilst there are others that may be a little more stable, I thing DayZ offers the most interesting survival experience. I personally prefer Rust, but that's a very different game despite sharing genre.

3 years and still nothing ...

There are attempts at similar games, but they usually get boring quite quickly

DayZ is THE best infected survival sim around.
No other game gives anybody andreline rushes because the stakes aren't as high. In other games you have nothing to lose.
Most of the crap in the game is the first iteration of technologies and are horribly outdated. The internal build the dev team is working on (.63) is the game everyone wants DayZ to be. The engine is almost done. Lol.

How good an FPS is DayZ?

Matt Purslow (after 9 hours play time)

No. If you're looking to play DayZ as a shooter, go elsewhere. It's really clunky, obtuse, and awkward. Shooting is unsatisfying and difficult, and very obviously not the main feature of the game.

It's kinda shitty atm due to a few very basic and unfinished design choices. (related to aiming) but I still enjoy the way the combat generally works. Firearms behave somewhat authenticly. (E.G. you can chamber a round in the gun and then put the mag in so you have an extra round)
The game aims to be authentic. That's the point. A hardcore anti-game meant to kill you dead.

How realistic is DayZ?

1
Xer0 (after 3 days 21 hours play time)

Pretty Average. It does try though I guess.

DayZ is 'hyper-real'; it has everything real life survival has - hunger, thirst, injury, illness - but it's at accelerated pace. You'll die in two hours without food, a bandage will stop you bleeding even if your arm has been severed with an axe. Realistic situations have been tailored to become game mechanics. It's the first game you'll probably have ever played that emphasises the importance of wearing shoes.

How much fun are the weapons in DayZ?

Xer0 (after 3 days 21 hours play time)

If you can find any ammo that suits the broken farmers rifle you found them you'll have loads of fun trying to find something to shoot with it.

How well does DayZ let you develop your character?

If you call 75 colours of the same hoodie design and a few helmets character development then it does an outstanding job.

How good are Bohemia Interactive at releasing regular updates?

89
Matt Purslow (after 9 hours play time)

1120 days ago

Despite the general feel that DayZ feels no more complete than the day it started in Early Access, Bohemia do issue regular updates that add new and interesting features to the game.

CRNilsen (after 12 days 2 hours play time)

After they upgraded to the new engine, updates have been coming out quite regularly. Right now the new player animation is what everybody's waiting for, so lots of the glitches can be fixed and it can be ready to enter beta.

They are continously adding new hoodie colours and game breaking bugs. It's quite remarkable.

Would you buy at full price or wait for a DayZ sale?

89
Matt Purslow (after 9 hours play time)

1120 days ago

It rarely drops in price during sales, so if you're interested I'd say buy at full price. Do your research on the current state of the game before dropping cash on it, though.

I Regret buying this. Had much more fun in the arma2 mod.

CRNilsen (after 12 days 2 hours play time)

Most people who play this get more hours out of each dollar than any other game.

Should you buy DayZ now or wait for it to come out of Early Access?

89
Matt Purslow (after 9 hours play time)

1120 days ago

DayZ is almost certainly going to be in Early Access for many more months, if not years. If you're interested in the experience, then head in now and join the community. I wouldn't be surprised if by the time DayZ is considered 'finished' if the survival games bubble has burst and people are moving onto the next big thing.

1
Xer0 (after 3 days 21 hours play time)

It will never come out of early access. If by some chance they announce that it's finished and throw a AAA price tag on it. Run a mile. See Starforge for reference.

How bleak is the end of the world in DayZ?

89
Matt Purslow (after 9 hours play time)

1120 days ago

Really quite bloody bleak. It does abandoned towns and desolate train stations better than anyone. The wilderness feels unsettling. Bleakest of all though is how other players are willing to kidnap you and force bleach down your throat in order to steal your tin opener. DayZ really does brings out the worst in people.

How much freedom does DayZ give you?

89
Matt Purslow (after 9 hours play time)

1120 days ago

Like most survival games, DayZ spawns you in a random place and asks you to get on with it. You don't get much freer than that. No missions, no goals, no pointers.

How scary are the zombies in DayZ?

89
Matt Purslow (after 9 hours play time)

1120 days ago

Really scary, but mostly from a coding standpoint. They're almost impossible to escape, have the added advantage of being able to teleport through walls, fences, and up stairs. They do make some gross sounds though, so they're scary in the traditional sense, too.

How active is the PvP community in DayZ?

89
Matt Purslow (after 9 hours play time)

1120 days ago

Too active, as most people will tell you. You can't walk five minutes without someone taking a pot shot at you, and everyone is fine with bashing your head in with a baseball bat in the name of looting your corpse, even if you don't actually own anything. It makes achieving things in DayZ difficult. This is a problem with the player-base rather than the game itself, but be warned that this is going to be your experience for a significant percentage of your time with DayZ.

1
Xer0 (after 3 days 21 hours play time)

As long as you never enter a town or clearing you'll be fine. Probably...

Why do gamers stop playing DayZ after playing for many hours

89
Matt Purslow (after 9 hours play time)

I decided that it's harsh player base and rinse-and-repeat life cycle just wasn't for me. A bit like how I'm not into BDSM, really.
