You’re hungry and broke but that’s the least of your worries in Desert Child. Turns out the planet is going to explode and you’re stuck on it. But there is a way off if you’re up to the challenge: hoverbike racing. Imagine Akira crossed with the pod-racing of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
Desert Child is a mix of classic adventure games, job simulation, and intense shmup racing. You play as someone trapped on the planet as it becomes uninhabitable. The government has been helping people transport themselves to the safety of Mars but, in two weeks, the ticket prices for that life-saving journey are going up. Therein lies your dilemma.
In Desert Child you need to deliver pizzas, collect gun parts, and hunt bounties in order to make up the dosh needed to buy a ticket. But you also want to pick up fans, repair and customise your hoverbike, and enter into races so that you qualify for the Grand Prix, which takes place on the Red Planet itself.
As you can see in the images and the trailer below, Desert Bike is one hell of a looker, the pixel art really bringing the sci-fi world to life, and it gives the combat racing a brilliant sense of speed and peril.
