November 5, 2018 Diablo 4 was nearly announced at BlizzCon, according to a new report.
Diablo 4 was not announced at BlizzCon. You know this by now – Blizzard’s keynote ended awkwardly with the mobile-only Diablo Immortal, and the lack of a proper, PC-based follow-up in the series has been met with no shortage of anger online. Blizzard has hinted that Diablo 4 is in development, and apparently they were set to officially confirm that at BlizzCon before a last-minute change of plans.
The original plan at BlizzCon 2018 was for a video from company co-founder Allen Adham to close the keynote. In that video, Adham would confirm that Diablo 4 was in development but not yet ready for a public showing.
That info comes from two anonymous sources speaking to Kotaku. One of those sources says that Diablo 4 has “changed drastically” since entering development nearly half-a-decade ago, and it could still be in store for further changes.
Diablo 4’s development is, at this point, an open secret. Blizzard has hinted numerous times that the game is coming, including in a recent blog post that attempted to manage expectations going into BlizzCon.
Clearly, those attempts at cooling the jets of Diablo fans haven’t worked out. Blizzard has said (again) that multiple Diablo projects are in the works, but the virulent reaction to the Diablo Immortal announcement hasn’t gotten any less pronounced in the meantime. There is a proper Diablo coming, but it might still be a long way off.
