After 32 years, you might think that Doom, the greatest FPS game in history (fact), could no longer present a challenge. One of the most comprehensively excavated PC games of all time, we know how the enemies work, the damage values of all the weapons, even where the linedef triggers are placed on every level - both Doom and Doom 2 have been picked clean. And yet, the fires of Hell rage on. Sigil 2, created by John Romero himself, is one of the most punishing Doom map packs ever built. If you're a veteran of the Phobos base, a champion of the Icon of Sin, and are eagerly awaiting Doom The Dark Ages, thanks to a surprise update from Bethesda, you can try to tackle Sigil 2 right now.
Separated into eight levels, Sigil 2 is an extra campaign originally released to mark Doom's 30th anniversary. A sequel to the beloved Sigil, also made by Romero, it challenges you to play the classic FPS game at a very different tempo. Typically, Doom is all about running and gunning - the more aggressive you play, the higher your chance of survival. Sigil 2 punishes the fearless. If you play on the higher difficulties, there is a Cyberdemon on every level. Enemies spawn behind you, the floors are thin and surrounded by inescapable lava pits, and the climactic boss fight pits you against two Cyberdemons and a Spider Mastermind - and there is no BFG. If you want something to keep you busy before the Doom The Dark Ages release date arrives, Sigil 2 is ideal.
And now you can play it straight from the official Doom and Doom 2 bundle published by Bethesda. You don't even have to download it as a mod - when you boot the game and hit the screen where you choose which campaign you want to play, Sigil 2 now appears on the main menu. Elsewhere in the latest update, a few small bugs have been fixed, including some missing sound effects, and a problem with crashing when using either mods or the automap has also been remedied.
