The world’s highest-paid esports star wants to “become a soldier for the earth”

Dota 2 champion Johan “N0tail” Sundstein has spoken about his plans to join the fight for the environment

When team OG went on to take the win at Dota 2 tournament The International 2019, Johan ‘N0tail’ Sundstein became the most successful Dota 2 player in history – and the highest-earning esports star ever (on that topic, here’s a list of the highest-earning esports teams for comparison). Now, Sundstein has revealed that he has some other big plans on the horizon – he wants to jump into helping fight for the environment and become a “soldier for the earth.”

The Dota 2 champion has told Danish TV station TV2 Sport (via Dot Esports) about his plans for environmentalist work: translated via Google, he said, “I hope that someday I can do something for the environment. That’s the biggest topic right now. The world is burning up. It’s kind of a plan to jump into that fight. Throw myself into it. Become a soldier for the earth. Mother Nature. I have some plans and ideas.”

Though it seems he’s currently got plans to continue playing Dota 2 for another season, looking to chase down a full “three rings,” it sounds like playing Dota 2 at the top level might not always feature in his long-term plans. He said that “next year I’ll probably start thinking about something else,” also adding that concern for the environment is a “weight,” and that he feels it himself – “it’s everyone’s responsibility.”

Sundstein has achieved immense success in the Dota 2 competitive world as part of OG, being a key part of their achievement in becoming the first team ever to win two TI championships – and in a row, having also scored victory in TI 2018.

It’s not clear exactly what his plans for environmentalism work are just yet, but it’ll be interesting to see if and how the esports star makes the move from Dota 2 champion to becoming a champion for the planet.
