Epic opens a streaming-focused studio with the founders of Rogue Squadron dev Factor 5

Epic Games Cologne is opening for business

August 17, 2019 Epic Games Cologne will work to bolster the company’s existing streaming technology.

Epic is opening up a new studio in Cologne, Germany, and the location will be manned by the founding members of Factor 5, the German studio probably best known for the classic action space shooter, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Epic Games Cologne will be focused on “emerging forms of interactive media and streaming technologies.”

“Epic Games Cologne will continue to further work on existing streaming technologies,” an Epic Games spokesperson tells us, “such as those on display during the Fortnite World Cup and voice communications as part of Epic Online Services.”

The company names Julian Eggebrecht as director of online technology and Achim Moller as studio director – two of the five people who made up Factor 5 back in 1987, and both of them have been with Epic since earlier this year. Eggebrecht was previously vice president of Hulu, and Epic says the team has previously worked with Amazon and Netflix in addition to their history with games. That all seems like the perfect cross-section of experience for a streaming-focused game studio.

“At the core of Epic’s success are highly-skilled and passionate individuals,” Eggebrecht says in a press release.

“Germany is a nation at the forefront of technology and we look forward to extending our local presence as we fill newly created roles and hire exceptional talent.”
