Forget Shadowbringers, FFXIV’s next expansion is already in development

Naoki Yoshida says that he's already working on the new expansion - but don't expect it to arrive for a while yet

Final Fantasy XIV’s latest expansion, Shadowbringers, hasn’t even been out for a full week yet, but despite a warm reception, Square Enix doesn’t appear to be resting on its laurels. Game director Naoki Yoshida has confirmed that the game’s next major update is already in the works.

According to a post on Reddit, during a keynote speech at Japan Expo 2019 in Paris, Yoshida confirmed to attendees that “a new expansion pack is in development.” While details are relatively scarce, the director – who has worked on all of the game’s major releases – asked players in attendance which new jobs should be included in the update.

While far from guaranteed, the Reddit post states that those players asked for a healer, as well as a beast master and chemist. We’ll likely be waiting a while before we know which jobs will be included in update 6.0, however, as fans speculate that the new expansion won’t release until summer 2021, based on the game’s previous update cadence.

Given the game’s ongoing success – Final Fantasy XIV’s player count is now more than 16 million – it’s no great surprise that more content is in the works. Until we get official confirmation, it’s worth keeping your expectations in check, but I imagine that we haven’t seen the last of FFXIV just yet.

Shadowbringers got off to a difficult start as a result of a DDoS attack, but has been up and running successfully since then. If you’re yet to get up to speed, however, you can check out our FFXIV leveling guide to help you speed to the endgame.
