How to heat homes in Frostpunk 2

Your people need a safe, warm space to live, which is difficult considering the chilly weather, so here’s how to heat homes in Frostpunk 2.

How do you heat homes in Frostpunk 2? Not having your population freeze to death should be fairly high on your list of priorities as Steward of a colony. This can be troublesome, however, due to the rather inclement weather outside, so you’re going to have to find a way to heat those homes sufficiently and consistently enough if you want to thrive in the cold.

There are many things you’ll have to get your head around in Frostpunk 2, with FP2 Heatstamps vital to expansion, FP2 Frostland Teams essential for exploration, and having to balance FP2 trust so your populace doesn’t mutiny. One of the most basic but most important things you’ll have to manage is warmth, though, so here’s how to heat homes in Frostpunk 2.

Heating homes in Frostpunk 2

When you have a small settlement, heating homes is relatively simple: put your housing districts next to the generator. The heat produced by the generator is usually more than enough to heat those nearby residences. When you expand, however, getting warmth to those who need it is a little more tricky. Here’s how to heat homes in Frostpunk 2:

Use the terrain

There are certain circumstances in which you’ll be able to build housing districts within canyons or gullies, sheltering the people from (some) of the horrendous conditions outside, and sparing them from the worst of the wind. When assigning a district, you’ll be able to see whether the area you’ve chosen will have any benefits.

Build your districts close together

You can create microclimates within your colony by bunching your various districts together. Some of your more industrial districts may produce pollution, but they will help retain heat – it all depends on how desperate you are and whether this benefit outweighs the potential complications.

Research housing insulation

If you can’t supply more heat to the homes you already have, then the next best thing is to research technology that will help them retain heat. Things like Asbestos Lining can be unlocked which will reduce the burden on your generator. There is an entire Heating section of the research screen dedicated to the most precious of resources, examine it and decide what is best – and what will help with your Frostpunk 2 trust levels.

Build Heat Dispatchers

You can add a Heat Dispatcher to a preexisting housing district which will output an additional 20 heat to that area. It requires a fair chunk of resources to build and a large workforce to run, but this could be a real difference maker in keeping your populace warm, especially if you have the workforce to space.

Generator Overdrive

In dire circumstances – or when there’s a heavy whiteout taking place – you can tick a little box on your Generator screen that makes it run past its normal parameters. This will increase the heat output, but it cannot be used forever, and if you don’t turn overdrive off it can have… catastrophic consequences.

Now that you know how to heat homes in Frostpunk 2, you shouldn’t have any issues whatsoever guiding the last light of humanity to a safe future – either that or 50 other issues will pile on and you’ll end up being sent out into the cold in your underpants for passing a law that bans children from owning flick knives.
