Gearbox is working on a major new family-friendly series

Gearbox's next new game looks to be one for all ages

Gearbox has a new series on the way, and while we don’t know if it’s a truly new IP or something licensed, it’s going to be a “tent-pole franchise for the company.” It’s also going to be a family-friendly one, which is in stark contrast to the studio’s historically adult-oriented games.

The news comes via John Vignocchi, who announced today that he’s joining Gearbox Publishing as executive producer on the new project. Gearbox Publishing, it must be noted, is separate from Gearbox Software proper – this is the division that publishes titles from third parties, including We Happy Few, recent Homeworlds, and various versions of Fortnite and Subnautica.

“We will be working on something that we hope will surprise and delight gamers of all ages,” Vignocchi says on Twitter, “whether you’re six or sixty… And I cannot wait to share more!” Vignocchi previously oversaw toys-to-life brand Disney Infinity prior to the Mickey Mouse company’s general exit from game development, which gives him plenty of experience with all-ages franchises – though given the fate of Infinity, I wouldn’t expect another franchise centered on toy sales.

We’ll find out more on this new, family-friendly series in the future, but the thing most fans will be looking for is the Borderlands 3 release date – and Gearbox has all but confirmed that the follow-up is in full development. We’ll hopefully find out more on all this new stuff sooner rather than later.
