Grand Theft Auto V is the most profitable entertainment product ever

Grand Theft Auto V

It’s no secret that Grand Theft Auto V has made an awful lot of money, but it’s now crossed another milestone. The game is now reportedly the most profitable entertainment product ever.

They might have made a lot, but Rockstar has the highest gender pay gap in the UK games industry.

Since its release in September 2013, GTAV has sold around 90 million units, making it the best-selling videogame of all time. Add to those sales figures all of the money the game makes through microtransactions thanks to GTA Online, and it’s made more money than any other piece of entertainment, be that book, film, album, or videogame.

Doug Creutz, an analyst for Cowen, told MarketWatch that GTAV has made around $6 billion since release, putting its success far ahead of even the most successful films – Gone with the Wind, for example, has made around $3 billion (adjusted for inflation). Even adding DVD sales and streaming service revenue to those figures leaves Rockstar’s game far ahead of the nearest competition.

Meanwhile, Rockstar show no signs of stopping when it comes to GTAV, with new vehicles and the restoration of Vice City’s Hotring featuring in recent updates. That work clearly pays off, as the game recently topped the UK charts for the 15th time, nearly five years after its initial release.
