There are a lot of perks in being one of the most popular gaming streamers on Twitch, but it also has its downside too. Probably the biggest problem with playing an online game live on Twitch, YouTube, Mixer or wherever is that literally everyone can easily find where you are at any time – a practice called stream sniping, where other players in the game with the streamer cheat and find out where they are by watching their stream.
It’s a practice that gets more common the more popular you are, and streamer Summit1g – otherwise known as Jaryd Lazar, which is actually a better name than his online handle – is very popular, with almost four million followers on his Twitch channel.
Consequently Summit1g has suffered more than his fair share of stream snipers, and has had enough. In a recent broadcast of GTA RP – the GTA Online role-playing server – Summit1g found himself again at the mercy of stream sniping, and broke character to rant about the practice and the people doing it.
Dexerto followed the stream and noted Summit1g’s continual annoyance throughout the GTA RP experience. He began by complaining about how often he was found by the cops – played by other role-players – and seemingly didn’t believe it was down to luck. “In the last four days, I’ve escaped the cops probably 10 different times, and I swear I get caught hiding every time – whether far away or close to the scene.”
Once he got arrested and placed in a cell, however, that’s when Summit1g broke character – launching into an angry and barely-coherent rant about stream snipers, and how what they’re doing is both easy and annoying.
“I’m not accusing anyone of anything, but let’s not pretend that it isn’t the easiest fucking thing on the planet,” he complained, “especially when it’s an RP server and you turn your camera off. I can have 18 cellphones lined up across my fucking table and tell you where everyone and their fucking mom is, alright?”
As we write this Summit1g is back in GTA RP right now, so clearly he’s not put off by the snipers. Somehow we don’t think this will be the last time he experiences them, either.
