Guild Wars’ ninth anniversary starts three weeks early because of typo

Typos make fools of us all, whether it’s writing ‘Best retards’ at the bottom of an email or the missing overbar that sent Mariner 1 into an explosive descent over Venus, but in ArenaNet’s case it’s made them the bringer of joy to Guild Wars players.

ArenaNet were planning on kicking off Guild Wars; ninth anniversary celebrations on the 22 April. Due to a typo in their internal schedule the cork was pulled three weeks early on the 2 April.

“Looks like the internal schedule had a typo of 2 instead of 22,” explained Guild Wars programmer, Joe Kimmes. “The plan is to fix the anniversary start date for next year and let players get the benefits of the mistake this year. Enjoy the extended birthday celebration!”

The celebrations include festivities along the Shing Jea Boardwalk, and ArenaNet have opened up the Dragon Arena and the Rollerbeetle Races. Throughout the event you can get special birthday cupcakes.

The boardwalk has special NPCs and events taking place and there are 15 minute long fireworks displays taking place every hour at the Great Temple of Balthazar, Lion’s Arch, Shing Jea Monastery and Kamadan, Jewel of Istan.

You can also unlock the Hound of Balthazar by talking to Ceira, Sworn to Fire. Or you can got visit the Kaineng Center and Shing Jea Monastery to check out the decorations.

There’s a load of other celebration items to pick up from loot drops – hard liquor and fireworks were the stand out for me.

You have till the 29 April to enjoy them all.
