C’Thun returns in mecha form in Hearthstone’s Boomsday expansion

Hearthstone's favourite Elder God returns in The Boomsday Project, but this time C'Thun is all meched-up and even more powerful

Ahead of the release of the new expansion, The Boomsday Project, a new Hearthstone card has been revealed, and it’s maybe the most bizarre I’ve seen yet. Mecha’thun is a legendary neutral minion that has the power to instantly win the game.

If you’ve been playing Hearthstone regularly over the past couple of years, you’ll definitely recognise Mecha’thun. After all, it’s the mechanical reincarnation of fan-favourite C’Thun, a legendary card from the now-retired Whispers of the Old Gods expansion. C’Thun could be powered up over the course of a game through the use of its various disciples, before being unleashed to deal a bunch of damage to your enemy’s side of the board.

Mecha’thun has even more destructive power than before, but it does come with some significant caveats. The ten-mana 10/10 comes with a Deathrattle that states that “if you have no cards in your deck, hand, and battlefield, destroy the enemy hero.” That’s obviously pretty impactful, but it’s worth noting that pulling it off is going to be pretty tough.

To run through those conditions, Mecha’thun (via IGN) likely needs to be the last card you play – for one thing, you won’t be able to play it without ten mana, but for another, you need to have nothing left in your deck or hand to make its deathrattle work. That’s going to be a pretty fine balance to strike, as it’s very possible that the game could end way before you play all your cards.

Mecha’thun is only the second card to be able to win the game instantly, if you count Uther of the Ebon Blade and his four horsemen as one card. There are plenty of ways you could pull it all off, of course, but Hearthstone is a fickle mistress, and you know what they say about the best laid plans…

Blizzard seem to be going a bit off the wall with the new expansion – another of the new Boomsday Project cards is Whizbang the Wonderful, a legendary card that essentially removes your entire deck and replaces it with one of his own. He’s not the most meta-relevent card you’ll ever see, but he promises to be pretty good fun. The Boomsday Project releases on August 9.
