Leeroy Jenkins is retiring from Hearthstone

The famous Paladin is hanging up his pauldrons

That’s right – it’s a sad day in the world of Hearthstone for some, and perhaps a joyous day for others. Leeroy Jenkins is stepping down. The card, named after the famed World of Warcraft player, is being ‘hall of famed’ by Blizzard and will no longer be part of the standard format.

When cards that have no limit in standard format get removed and placed in the Wild format, normally due to balancing issues or meta stagnation, they’re getting the ‘hall of fame’ treatment. Some of the most notable hall of fame cards include Genn Greymane and Baku the Mooneater, which frustrated many players in past metas.

And now Leeroy Jenkins has joined the line-up of cards to be removed from standard, along with some famous friends. Mountain Giant, Mind-Control Technician, Acolyte of Pain, and Spellbreaker are the neutral cards calling time out on their long careers in the game on March 26. You would be hard-pressed to find a player who hadn’t used any of these cards in a deck here or there through the years, so their absence will be felt – though whether that’s a positive or a negative will be pretty subjective to the player.

There are more cards on their way out due to a complete Priest rework: Auchenai Soulpriest, Holy Fire, Prophet Velen, Shadowform, Divine Spirit, and Northshire Cleric – but that’s for another story.

Now that we’ve had a little cry and mourn for our friends – gone but not forgotten – there’s actually a bunch of new stuff being added to the game, from the new expansion Ashes of Outlands to a whole new class Demon Hunter. We have a round-up here.
