Hexcells Infinite Review

Have you come up with any clever strategies in Hexcells Infinite?

Hexcells is more about technique than strategy. The pre-built 'campaign' levels will gradually teach them, from simple to abstract, and the more difficult ones do take some mental agility to figure out. In the Infinite mode (seed generated levels) most of the advanced techniques can be forgotten as the puzzles are relatively straightforward.

How hard are the puzzles in Hexcells Infinite?

In campaign mode the puzzles get progressively harder, becoming very difficult later on. This doesn't make the game insurmountable though - mistakes made are merely tallied up and recorded, they don't prevent progression. In infinite mode the puzzles are much easier, although can still be tricky, especially if you haven't played through the pre-built puzzles.

The graphics are functional. Clear and crisp, very minimalistic. Some people get a little confused over which button results in which coloured tile, but this can be swapped.

There's something calming about the ambient sound and the soft clicking of the tiles. It will be there in the background barely noticed, but subtly adding to the atmosphere.

How does Hexcells Infinite run on your PC?

It isn't a taking game, performance wise. It runs smoothly on my gaming rig, and I would expect it to do the same on my clunky old laptop should I ever blow the dust off it.

How good is the Mac port of Hexcells Infinite?

I'm going to use this box for something I hope is far more useful than describing a Mac port. The beauty of Infinite, which is missing from the other Hexcells games, is the Infinite mode from which it takes its name. I've prolonged my time with the game probably tenfold by competing for best times on the daily puzzles (it uses the date as the seed) against my friends. Every day I play a few random puzzles as a warm up, then try to get a winning time on the day's level. They never take more than about ten minutes, usually far shorter. The only reason I held back half a star from the final score is the lack of an in-game scoreboard with my Steam buddies.
