What are the best Silksong Tools? It's an understatement to say that Silksong is challenging. While some players are reveling in the undertaking, others are struggling with tough bosses and even tougher runbacks. If you're in the latter camp, we feel your pain, so we've done our research to help you (and ourselves) out.
You may get some way through the Silksong map before even realizing how good Hollow Knight Silksong's Tools are, but these valuable items are essential to your success. There are three tool types, limited slots, and secret locations to get to grips with if you're going to unlock the best tools in the Metroidvania game. Here are all the Silksong Tool locations and which ones you should be using.

The best Silksong Tools
Here are the best Silksong Tools in each tool type:
- Best red tools: Sting Shard, Cogwork Fly, Tacks, Cogwork Wheel, Plasmium Phial
- Best blue tools: Druid's Eye, Fractured Mask, Pollip Pouch, Volt Filament, Spool Extender, Reserve Bind, Longclaw
- Best yellow tools: Compass, Magnetite Brooch, Magnetite Dice, Shell Satchel, Ascendant's Grip
Best red tools
Red tools improve your attack capabilities, providing you with new ways to eliminate enemies. These weapons are generally ranged, and all red tools are limited, regenerating every time Hornet sits at a bench or rest spot, or through utilizing the Architect Crest's special ability. You will need Shell Shards to replenish these tools; otherwise, you won't be able to use them.
For the best red tools, we'd recommend replacing the default Straight Pin with the Sting Shard as soon as possible. This tool sends out a bundle of blades that remains dormant until an enemy touches it, or Hornet hits it, shooting outward. The Sting Shard is incredible for dealing with airborne enemies, especially in the early game where Hornet doesn't have much mobility yet.
Once you've unlocked an additional red slot, the extra masks of health provided by the Plasmium Phial make it an excellent choice for those who take a lot of damage, or who want to utilize their silk for other things during a fight. As Hornet lacks masks early on, the Plasmium Phial can be an absolute game-changer.
As you get into the meat of Act 2, Hornet's arsenal only gets better. The Cogwork Fly, Tacks, and Cogwork Wheel are all incredibly powerful red tools that can make bossing a breeze. The Cogwork Fly sends out up to three flies that track and attack enemies. Scattering tacks on the floor deals a ton of damage to ground-based foes. The Cogwork Wheel, meanwhile, gives you the best of both worlds when facing Hornet's toughest challenges. These wheels initially zoom across the floor, before heading up the closest wall and bouncing off back down into the arena.
Best blue tools
Blue tools are passive defensive tools that provide valuable support for Hornet during combat. Almost any combination of blue tools will prove beneficial, but they take a while to unlock.
Our early game pick is the Druid's Eye, which can be picked up fairly early in the game after completing the Mossberries quest. Granting bonus Silk when taking damage, the Druid's Eye allows you to heal or use your skill more often. Another great survivability option is the Fractured Mask, which absorbs one instance of death-dealing damage before breaking. Don't worry, though, it restores itself whenever you rest.
If there's one blue tool we'd recommend, it's the Pollip Pouch. This applies venom to your red tools, granting them additional damage and even unique effects. It is, and we cannot stress this enough, busted. Poisoned tools helped us breeze through Act 2's toughest challenges, and the Pollip Pouch can be yours after hunting down the Silksong Pollips in Shellwood. The Volt Filament effectively serves the same purpose as the Pollip Pouch, albeit for Hornet's silk abilities.
If you haven't been hunting for Spool Fragments yet, then you'll love the Spool Extender. While equipped, this tool adds an extra four silk notches to your bar, meaning you'll be able to bind and have enough silk leftover for a skill when fully charged.
While the Multibinder/Injector Band combo is excellent for exploration, granting you an extra mask worth of healing without the former's speed penalty, we found the Reserve Bind to be an excellent alternative for frenetic boss fights where you rely more on your tools to do the damage. This tool gives you an emergency silk reserve that can be used to bind once, before requiring recharge at a bench. It's incredibly clutch, and we wouldn't have been able to clear the game without it.
Finally, if you're taking too many hits from contact damage, and aren't vibing with the Reaper Crest, then go and grab the Longclaw. You likely won't come across it until later in Act 2, but it's an excellent pogo aid that will help you through the act's trickiest trials.
Best yellow tools
Yellow tools are for exploration, aiding you in finding your way around the mammoth Silksong map or helping you find and collect valuable items from your surroundings.
One of the best yellow tools you can acquire early on is the Compass, as the map takes some getting used to. Once you have a Memory Locket, it's beneficial to add the Magnetite Brooch to hoover up any loose rosaries, particularly useful on Silksong Rosary farming runs.
While yellow tools typically aid navigation, Magnetite Dice is a bit of an exception to the rule. This ridiculously handy tool has a chance of negating an instance of damage, granting you a clutch factor during those tough boss fights. Check our Silksong dice game guide for more on that.
We've already talked up the potency of poison tools when dealing with enemies, and you'll want to grab the Shell Satchel at your earliest convenience. While equipped, this increases Hornet's maximum carried tool capacity, effectively upping your DPS. Note: this is only available in Steel Soul mode.
Silksong has some incredibly challenging platforming sections, including those found in Mount Fay, and the Ascendant's Grip is a must bring. This tool lets you permanently hang in place, granting you all the breathing room you need before making that next leap.
How to equip tools
Equipping tools is as simple as dragging an item into a slot on your Crest menu. However, you must be seated at a bench or rest spot to do so. This means you can't switch tools at will, so you must plan ahead. For example, you may want to equip the Magma Bell if you know you're about to enter the Deep Docks, then take it off again when resting on the other side.
Extra tool slots
You can unlock one additional slot for each tool type using Memory Lockets. These can be found across Pharloom and purchased from various vendors, including Mort, who also sells a Tool Pouch, another method for increasing tool capacity.
You should also bear in mind that additional slots are locked to the current Crest and won't carry over to another, so be careful when using Memory Lockets. Check out our standalone guide if you need to know more about Silksong Crests.
