Homeworld gets teaser video ahead of a “special announcement” at PAX West

Gearbox will make a Homeworld announcement later this month

It looks some potentially exciting news might be on the horizon for fans of Homeworld, the nearly 20-year-old RTS sci-fi game that saw you take on the Taiidan Empire to claim back the Kushan’s ancient home planet of Hiigara. Studio Gearbox has revealed on Twitter that it will celebrate Homeworld’s 20th birthday with a “special announcement” about the game later this month – and there’s a teaser video you can check out right now.

The post on the Homeworld Twitter channel reads “Celebrate 20 years of Homeworld with a special announcement on August 30th during the Gearbox Main Theater Show at 1:30pm PT from PAX West!” – and it includes a brief teaser video, which you can get a look at below.

The footage doesn’t give much away – you see a shot of outer space and then what looks like an updated Homeworld logo traced out among the stars. So, what the announcement might be is anyone’s guess right now.

Given that Homeworld and Homeworld 2 have already seen remastered versions, plus a prequel game, Deserts of Kharak, released in the years since Gearbox took the series on in 2013, it looks possible that the announcement could be for a whole new Homeworld title, or even perhaps a console port of some kind, though these are far from confirmed at this point.

Judging by people’s comments under the Twitter post so far, it looks like news of this announcement has already got some fans pretty hyped, and the studio has responded with a playful Backstreet Boys “Quit playin’ games with my heart” gif in reply to one hopeful commenter.

PAX West kicks off August 30, and it looks like you’ll be able to catch this mysterious announcement on Gearbox’s Twitch channel. What it’ll be, we’ll just have to wait and see.
