150,000 copies of Rust sold in just 2 weeks

Rust sells 150,000 copies in 2 weeks

Rust is out on Early Access; here’s our Rust review.

Rust, from the mind of Garry’s Mod creator Garry Newman, has done pretty damn well since releasing on Steam Early Access, with over 150,000 copies sold. Nobody is more surprised than Garry himself. “You know what’s crazy? I always said that we’ll never make a game as popular as Garry’s Mod. GMod’s success is a fluke – and we’ll never be able to recreate anything like the popularity of it.”

Yet Garry’s Mod only sold 34,000 copies in the first fortnight, and while that changed Garry’s life, it pales in comparison to the success of Rust, even though the game is far from finished and has been targeted by hackers and ne’er-do-wells.

But Garry acknowledges how the PC landscape has changed since Garry’s Mod launched. “Garry’s Mod went on sale in 2006. It was like the 5th ever game to be sold on Steam. Steam was untested and a lot of people were suspicious of it. It wasn’t the universally loved central hub of PC gaming that is is now.”

Now he wants to earn the money that Early Access purchasers have paid for Rust. “It very much feels like we have been given all of this money – but we haven’t yet earned it. That’s something we have to do now.”
