Following on from the success of Mark of the Ninja and Don’t Starve, Klei have announced their next game will go off in a whole new direction: Incognita is a turn-based espionage game that takes more than a few notes from XCOM.

While details of the game are still hidden, there is word that an alpha will launch soon.

Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, Klei founder Jamie Cheng revealed Incognita would be “using procedural generation […]. It’s gonna be pretty raucous. It’s almost like we’re taking all the learnings from Don’t Starve and Mark of the Ninja, and making something new with it.”

Without giving much away about the game’s mechanics, Cheng emphasised the role information gathering will play in Incognita. “If you play the new XCOM – which is a fucking amazing game – it’s 90 percent positioning,” said Cheng. “Ten percent information gathering and 90 percent positioning.” He wants to reverse that in Incognita, so you will be scouting the enemy’s position long before you move to encircle them.

Klei hope to launch the alpha – which will be accessible by preordering the game – later this summer. With the game’s launch we should learn a lot more about how exactly this will all work.
