It begins: the Steam Summer Sale has arrived and even Dead Rising 3 is getting in on the action

Steam Summer Sale 2014 starts

It’s here. The Steam Summer Sale has arrived. Do you know where your wallet is? Mine’s locked inside a matryoshka-like safe, which in turn is wrapped up in chains and locked by a key that I have fed to a snake which I have sent on a plane to a distant land.

The twist for this Summer Sale is team-based shenanigans. Everyone will be assigned a team, randomly, and these teams compete for rewards. The team with the most points - gained from crafting Summer Adventure badges - wins each day, and 30 members will receive 3 games from their wish list.

But enough faffing: what about the deals?

Today’s daily deals are a solid bunch:

  • Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion £5.99/$7.99
  • Democracy 3: £6.45/$8.49
  • DayZ: £16.99/$25.49
  • The Witcher 2: £2.99/$3.99
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown: £4.94/$8.49
  • Divinity: Original Sin: £23.99/$31.99
  • Don’t Starve: £2.74/$3.74
  • Far Cry 3: £3.74/$7.49
  • Dead Rising 3: £29.99/$37.49

That’s an exceptional start to the sale, with each game being pretty special. It’s hard to really recommend any over the others, but Far Cry 3 for less than £4 and less than a fiver for XCOM are both lovely.

And Dead Rising 3 isn’t even out yet, but is still 25 percent off. Not bad at all.

Let’s not forget about the flash sales, either. Remember, these are only good for 8 hours.

  • Dead Island: Riptide: £4.99
  • Hotline Miami: £1.04
  • Mirror’s Edge: £2.49
  • DMC: Devil May Cry: £7.49

You can vote on the next four games to enter the flash sale, too. Do it three times and you get a Summer Adventure trading card.

So, anything tickling your fancy yet?

I wonder how people are getting on trying to sign in to your site through Steam. :)

Ugh. I got Far Cry 3 and Payday 2. I don't think they were even on my wishlist.

Typical Steam sale reaction from me, there. :)

I just picked up Creeper World 3, Startopia, and Vertiginous Golf for under a tenner. Aside from the obvious, I'd recommend a cheap punt on:

Mirror's Edge - I was pleasantly surprised by the smooth movement and lack of gunplay

Hotline Miami - Stylish, surreal, and instantly gratifying

Planetary Annihilation - I've not picked it up yet, but it's down 50%

Update on my wallet situation:

The snake somehow escaped the plane, snuck back into my flat and vomited up the key. When I went to pick it up, I slipped on the aforementioned vomit and, as I fell, slotted the key into the lock. Then the matryoshka safe exploded.

Long story short, I bought Enslaved and Dark Scavenger.
