Have you heard of Kenshi? You probably should have if you’ve been a PC gamer for the past, ooo, let’s say the past decade. It’s a huge sandbox RPG that’s been in development for 12 years. Wow. Yes, that’s a long time – but it’s been well worth it for the result. It’s now hit its 1.0 version at long last and is ready for everyone to jump in and find out what all the hype is about. What hype? It’s got a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam after more than 5,000 hypes. That counts as hype.
To celebrate Kenshi reaching its landmark release we’re giving away ten Steam keys so can jump right in. You want one? Just enter the competition below – but first, let us tell you a little bit more about this fascinating “sword-punk RPG.” It’s not gonna be easy to sum it up as there’s so much you can do in its huge world but we’ll do our best.
So, Kenshi has a world that stretches across 870 square kilometres. That’s one of the largest open worlds you’ll find in videogames. But it’s not about size here, it’s about what you can do in that world. You can grow into any role you like: trader, thief, rebel, warlord, adventurer, farmer, or a slave if that’s what you want (or get forced into).
That sounds like your typical RPG offering sure – any role you want! But Kenshi has more as you can also put together a squad – hell, get an army together if you can – and then command them to take down enemies. There’s also the chance to construct cities to house your followers, upgrade your defences, and research new tech – it goes full RTS at times.
One of our favourite parts of Kenshi, however, is its simulation – especially its medical system. Survival starts off hard in Kenshi and will continue to be that way most of the time. Not only do you have to manage resources and keep your character’s body healthy by feeding and watering it, you also have to be aware of how soft your flesh is.
Get in a fight and those swords will take limbs off, causing your character to have to crawl around and bleed out. You’ll need bandages to save them and robotic limbs to get them back in the fight. It’s nasty!
