There's a great mission near the beginning of Cyberpunk 2077, where you have to pick up the flathead robot from the cyberware-obsessed Maelstrom gang. Everyone in Night City has implants, but when you come face to face with Royce, Maelstrom's hyper-violent leader, the whole front of his head is missing, replaced with a robotic, cycloptic laser. It's when CDPR's world starts to feel authentically dystopian - technology has driven people to the extreme. Mixing that visual style, Arkham and Sifu-style melee combat, and solid third-person shooting, Kiborg looks like one of 2025's most vicious new roguelikes, and it hits Steam soon.
It's the distant future and you're a convict serving a 1,300-year sentence for a crime you didn't commit. In the world of Kiborg, if somebody dies while they're in prison, their body is rebuilt using cybernetic implants and they're brought back to life. This is your fate. The only way to ever get out of jail is to become the winning contestant on a brutal reality TV show called The Last Ticket. On top of the prison is a shuttle - first person to reach it, or the last one alive, gets a reprieve. It's a roguelike where you're fighting for your freedom.
Grab whatever you can, chain together combos, and kick, punch, and body slam your way past waves of guards and fellow crims. Combat in Kiborg is weighty and physical, and you can upgrade all your attacks and defenses using the tech you scrounge from dead rivals. As well as your fists, feet, and augmentations, you've also got a full arsenal of guns. When you're fighting barehanded, Kiborg is a reflex-driven beat-'em-up and brawler. When you get a shotgun or a rifle, it feels more like Gears of War or Resident Evil 4.
The debut game from Sobaka Studio, Kiborg is finally on its way to Steam. The Kiborg release date is now confirmed for Wednesday April 30. If you want to wishlist it, or maybe get a taste of it thanks to the demo, you can already find it right here.
