The future of Lost Ark seemingly hangs in the balance, as key members of the Amazon Games team announce their departure from the studio that brought Smilegate's Korean-first MMO to a global audience. In response, the team has shared a message promising to "keep working to improve the game and move Lost Ark forward with every update," although its choice of words will, by its own admission, do little to calm the immediate fears of players.
Both Lost Ark community manager Roxanne Sabo and producer 'Hardcore' Henry Stelter have revealed that their time with Amazon Games is coming to an end. As the co-hosts of its regular developer update videos, the pair have long been the public face of Lost Ark alongside associate franchise lead Matthew Huston, who at the time of writing has yet to make a public statement about his future or the departures. These changes come just four months on from mass layoffs at Amazon Games.
Sabo writes, "To the Lost Ark community: you will always be my proudest achievement." She then says, in a message to Stelter, "It's been an honor to work by your side, Hardcore Henry." Stelter calls his time on the game "a rollercoaster with some high highs and low lows," but adds that he's loved "getting to work and pour my passion into Lost Ark." Responding to Sabo, he says he's "proud of what our teamwork led to."
An uncredited statement posted to the Lost Ark global website reads, "We want to address some recent changes you may have noticed. Some talented individuals have recently left the Lost Ark team as part of broader organizational decisions. We're grateful for their contributions, and transitions like this are never easy for anyone involved." It continues, "What gives us confidence moving forward is you, our community," citing a recent survey that was met with "detailed feedback" from more than 11,000 respondents.
"We hear your feedback , both positive and constructive, in and out of game, and it will shape what comes next," the statement concludes. "We know trust is earned through actions, not words. We'll keep working to improve the game and move Lost Ark forward with every update." While I appreciate the sentiment, it isn't the phrasing I would have chosen in response to key leaders of the Lost Ark team announcing their departure.
With this news coming hot on the heels of the Ends of the Abyss update that concluded the multi-year struggle against Kazeros, and the most recent roadmap only detailing plans through April, there will naturally be questions about what the future of Lost Ark looks like, particularly on a global scale. It's worth noting, however, that this is a different situation from Amazon's recently axed MMO New World, which was developed in-house.
Smilegate is still the primary developer on Lost Ark, although some global-specific additions such as the Paradise mode introduced in 2025 were heralded by the Amazon Games team. It's therefore possible that, should Amazon Games decide to step away from Lost Ark altogether, another publisher (or Smilegate themselves) could pick up the ball on putting the game out to a worldwide audience.
For now, we'll just have to wait and see what happens, and decide if Amazon's actions moving forward deliver sufficient reassurance for Lost Ark's future. I have reached out to the developer for additional comment, and will update this story with any response.
