Mad Max Review

How good is the Mad Max story?

960

1006 days ago

God, no. There isn't a story beyond "Max has lost his car".

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

Not at all. The story is about Max trying to build a new car, which will require him to take on some gang leaders in the process. Go watch the films if you're after story (not that they offer much more).

Max lose car. Need new car. Sometime accent slip.

No.
There are some good characters, good voice acting, good animations, but the story is barely there.
Basically "upgrade your car", with some other occasional story pieces.

KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

You could write the story on the back of a cigarette packet and still have room for the health warnings and a realistic picture of a goat.

Mediocre at best. The entire story is.. well.. there isn't a lot of it that's for sure. He lost his car and wants to get it back. That's about it

Everybody dies, everything gets stolen, every place gets burnt down. It's classic Mad Max...

Does the setting of Mad Max feel original?

960

1006 days ago

No, it's based on a series of movies.

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

It feels faithful to the films, especially Fury Road. However, the whole Mad Max style no longer feels original thanks to being copied so often by so many videogames. Even though Mad Max created that style, you'll feel like you've been here before.

Billy1234 (after 1 day 8 hours play time)

Not original, but very immersive.

How fun are the vehicles to control in Mad Max?

960

1006 days ago

They are fun, particularly when using them like giant steel weapons, but the inexplicable absence of a handbrake is utterly baffling.

Shift is handbrake.

On a controller there is no handbrake button on the default layout. It turns out that the alternate control scheme does map it to B however. Very silly stuff.

Really fun. The cars slide around easily and the boost gives a lot of control over the cars.
Use handbrake to do a 90 turn and stop the sliding by boosting to the direction you're pointing. Fun :P

CAR SMASH THINGS GOOD

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

Since Mad Max is mostly about cars, its a good job they're fun to drive. As they upgrade they become more of a joy, with arcade handling and big spikes to ram other cars with.

How much freedom does Mad Max give you?

960

1006 days ago

You can drive anywhere right from the get go, even out of the main game space and into a no-man's land with procedural landmarks.

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

The game is just about as open as an open world game can get.
There is only one real barrier in the game that basically cuts the map in half, but you get through that relatively early too.

393
KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

Quite a bit of freedom but there's not a lot of variation so....

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

The open world is massive, and you're free to go pretty much wherever you fancy when you have your car. The freedom mostly hinges on a Ubisoft-style open world template, and even though you're free to go anywhere, you probably won't be of the right level to do certain things when you get there.

How bleak is Mad Max?

393
KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

They try to make it bleak with cards from the past but to be honest it just feels like Wakefield on a Friday night.

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

A seemingly endless wasteland where basically everyone is out to kill you.

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

It's endless death in every direction, but the absurdity of the world and its car-worshiping inhabitants means Mad Max doesn't feel exactly bleak.

What strategies have you learned to survive in Mad Max?

960

1006 days ago

There's no need for strategy. Water and food are surprisingly abundant.

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

If you don't want to waste all your time collecting scrap, you should do the scrap related projects in the friendly bases. That gives you way more scrap that you could ever collect on your own.

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

Mad Max isn't a game that requires much strategy. The key thing is collecting scrap, so getting a clean up crew early in the game is useful (they collect scrap off the road for you, rather than you having to get out the car yourself).

How much fun are the weapons in Mad Max?

960

1006 days ago

There's very little shooting, and it doesn't add much to the game.

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

Not much gunplay to speak of. The game relies mostly on melee and car combat.
There's only a shotgun that works just fine, but barely has any ammo. It's mostly to thin the heard or shoot explosive stuff.

393
KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

The gunplay pretty much doesn't exist to speak of, you can use your shotgun but you can carry so little ammo you only really use it in emergencies.

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

Max carries a shotgun with him, but it's used mainly as a close combat weapon to blast back opponents. There's very little third-person shooting, and what there is is simply serviceable.

How well does Mad Max let you develop your character?

960

1006 days ago

You spend scrap to upgrade Max's abilities, gear and some cosmetic stuff. It's all pretty basic, but there's a bit of fun to be had in making Max look like a very hairy hobo biker.

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

Your car is at least as important a "character" as Max is. There's almost everything you could ever hope to have for upgrading your car.

Upgrading Max himself is mostly cosmetic stuff, stat boosts and occasional combat moves that have little real effect.

393
KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

There's a fair upgrade tree, but generally while there is some balance of armour vs speed, the upgrade path is pretty linear.

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

There's a massive amount of customisation options for both your car and Max. To a degree, it's actually over complicated for the game Mad Max is. Each upgrade offers tiny increases in power, and progressing through the tree feels more like a slog than levels of genuine achievement. You will end up with a bad-ass car though, so swings and roundabouts.

Do vehicles in Mad Max handle realistically?

960

1006 days ago

Not in the least. But that's not a problem, because weaponised cars are a lot more fun than your boring Toyota.

393
KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

Ask me next time I've driven rusted up V8 covered in spikes across a desert.

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

Not at all, but I doubt realistic vehicle handling would be fun in a game about ploughing into other road users at 80mph.

How open is Mad Max to explore?

960

1006 days ago

Completely open.

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

There is one barrier that basically cuts the map in half, but you get through it relatively early. There's a good change you can get to the other side of the barrier earlier, but there is so much to do that I never tried.

393
KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

Very. There's an initial lock off but after that, pretty much go wherever you like.

Would you buy at full price or wait for a Mad Max sale?

393
KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

I did but I'd advise wait. It suffers from Assassins-creed-esque "not another bloody tower" syndrome after a while.

960

1006 days ago

Wait for a sale.

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

Wait for a sale.
Weirdly you could get the game for under 30€ on sites like Green Man Gaming AT LAUNCH. (Some site's that I wouldn't completely trust were selling it for like 17€ !)

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

Full price is far too much for Mad Max, however you won't need to wait for a sale. From launch day it was already heavily discounted, so you should be able to find it at a decent budget price already if you fancy giving it a go.

How good are the graphics in Mad Max?

960

1006 days ago

For a post-apocalyptic wasteland adventure, Mad Max is rather pretty. Striking vistas, imposing storms, lots of lovely explosions -- good stuff. The aesthetics are more memorable than the graphics, though.

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

Great graphics. Some good particle effects and lighting, amazing draw distance and well hidden pop-ins.
It's about as beautiful as a desert-wasteland can get.

393
KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

Really amazingly lovely, for a broken desert full of death.

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

The environments and cars fare really quite well; the dust clouds from the storms are brilliant. Human characters suffer though, and look fairly generic.

How good are the sounds in Mad Max?

It has sounds, but for the life of me I can't remember any of them.

Sound effects and voice actors are competent enough, but music isn't memorable.

(Can you not edit these things?) Something I forgot: There is this rare problem where the whole game audio seemingly got stuck on silent for quite a while after a cutscene and then just suddenly went back to normal. Also, in one cutscene Max is hitting someone and the sound of the punch came like a full second before the impact...

Roaring monstrous engines, satisfying crashes and knuckle crunches, good voice acting, very good.

92
Matt Purslow (after 3 hours play time)

The cars sound like a dusty episode of Top Gear, and there's some nice Australian accents going around that keep the Mad Max vibe in tact.

How does Mad Max run on your PC?

960

1006 days ago

Like the Magnum Opus or the Black on Black hitting a long stretch of unobstructed road, blasting the nos.

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

One of the best multiplatform ports in a long time.
Some small problems though:
- Sometimes the cursor appears on screen after a cutscene or after getting out of the pause menu. (Fixed by just going in and out of the pause menu)
- Some people including me have been experiencing some hitching, but nothing too bad.

It's easy to forget these things because it's such a good port otherwise.
I'm getting 70-120FPS on max settings with 2K supersampling on a GTX770 and a FX8350. Now that's impressive.

What do gamers think of Mad Max after many hours of playing

417
1N07 (after 1 day 9 hours play time)

1000 days ago

Yes, but that has partly to do with the fact that I was watching(or mostly listening) to podcasts on my other monitor while doing the more repetitive scrap collecting and camp capturing.

393
KeefBaker (after 13 hours play time)

I was for the first 10 hours... Not sure at this point as the sheen has worn off.

Yeah, it's my go-to game when i'm too tired for a strategy game and just want to sit back with my controller and clear some objectives.
