Topic of the Week: What do you want from the new Mass Effect?

Topic of the Week: Mass Effect

It's time for another Topic of the Week. This week, we're buggering off up into space. What an exciting age we live in.

I’ll put my hands up and admit that I don’t care about how bad the Mass Effect 3 ending was. It didn’t destroy all the cracking stuff that came before it across the great space opera. There's a reason the series is on my list of the 15 best RPGs on PC. So I’m far from immune to the anticipation of the next Mass Effect that we know BioWare is working on.

But we know barely anything about it. Well, besides the return of the Mako and the absence of Shepard. So all we can really do is speculate, but isn’t speculating just splendid? So this week’s topic is: what do you want from the new Mass Effect.

As always, I’ll get the ball rolling.

A wee while after Mass Effect 3 came out, I had this very same discussion with my good chum and fellow wordy man Andy Astruc. He churned out a number of glorious ideas, but one of them has really stuck with me. Because it’s just awesome.

It starts with a simple premise: Salarians are rad. Really, really rad. Killing things is less rad, and is in fact rather mean. So we’ll have no more of that, thank you very much. Instead, our Salarian not-really-a-hero is on the run. He’s seen something he shouldn’t have seen, a conspiracy or whatever, and now some very bad people are after him, and all he can do is stay ahead of them.

Its The Man Who Knew Too Much meets Mirror’s Edge. It’s that amazing trailer for the Prey 2 that never was, but with a Salarian who simply doesn’t want to die.

That’s what I want Mass Effect 4/Next/Oh No! More Mass Effects to be. It’ll never happen, but a man can dream. About Salarians.

Okay, enough of my nonsense. What do you lovely lot want from the new Mass Effect.

I *adore* Mass Effect, and would quite happily play anything from that universe. But I'd actually like to see the series jump in time by a decent amount. Either pre-trilogy or post, enough to keep the core elements of the lore in-tact but see either some evolution or the seeds of things we know to come.

Also, less epic please. We can't top the galaxy-devouring Reapers without a new threat negating their impact, so I'd like to see stories on a smaller scale. Still use the vastness of the galaxy, but in stories that are more personal to the crew.

Also, I'd love a science angle. Your crew could be a team of scientists with a military back-up who investigate dangerous planets. This allows plenty of shooty action pieces, but also an interesting new reason to explore.

Instead of cutting out all the bad things from the first Mass Effect (like equipment) because of a poor interface, put them back in and just make the interface better :).

Add the exploration on the Mako from ME1 back in, just make it a bit more interesting.

Keep in being able to walk from ship to planet where you were docked instead of the cut-scene.

Much agreed with your points, but they have already showed us the return of the Mako (http://www.pcgamesn.com/mass-effect/new-mass-effect-details-revealed-comic-con-mako-gets-facelift). After watching the Mako clip I get the feeling they may be trying to push some boundaries with the system. My hopes are for whole worlds being accessible where you can drive in a straight line and circle the planet.

I want to explore, I want the ability to put my own crew together, I want the ability to fly different ships. I want a hidden main story that slowly reveals it self to me as I am exploring the galaxy. I also want girl-on-girl action :)

Exploration. The Mako scenes on the original game were scary as hell to me and my imagination. And an ending that isnt open to ambiguity would be a good step. Oh and, controller support for PC....

This is exactly what I put in Bioware's recent survey.

I'd like to see lots of things. Mostly I hope they set it in a completely different galaxy or at some point far in the past or just in an alternate universe so I don't have to think about 3's ending ever again.

I actually adored the multiplayer in 3, by the way, which never happens with singleplayer games. You may continue to tack it onto the game so long as it is equal in quality to 3's.

Smaller scale stories (Reapers was enough chaos, please don't try to top the destruction of the galaxy), but with next-gen consoles and new hardware I'd much rather see them develop a new incredible piece of software. Imagine having actual control over piloting your ship, giving you an Open World style (only with the whole universe rather than just the planets). If it was capable to do such a phase jump style whilst entering atmospheres, so that it was as if no loading screen but still able to then load the planets to a similar level of attention and detail as ME3, I would never stop playing the game. Admittedly that is a massive feet I'm putting out there, but at the same time this game is a long way off, they have said in there "announcement" for another ME that they are looking to make another ground-breaking step with this game. True open universe is my hopes anyway :)

I played all endings of ME3. When I kill all Reapers, in the last scene, Shepard breathed. That means Shepard can move on later. Other selections, causes these Shepard transforms to Reaper Lord or ultimate sacriface, so dead. If Shepard could survive, he will possibly make a baby with Ash. If he can't survive, I think Ashley Williams will be pregnant because of last action with Shepard. And our new character may be Shepard and William's child.

'I said Ash because I choose every time Ash in game, she was first and true love. ;) So can be anyone else like Liara'

So?

I want a connection between first triolgy and Andromeda.
