Mass Effect’s two protagonist options are brother and sister, their dad’s an N7 operative

Mass Effect

Turn’s out Mass Effect: Andromeda’s something of a family tale. Revealed in the video above with PlayStation Access, the Ryders (to be known as Mander and Ladyer from now on) are siblings. Meanwhile, the first character we ever saw back in the trailer at E3 2014 is their dad. Hopefully we can’t all guess where this is going.

Very high on the upcoming PC games list, this one.

So, what do we think? Explaining the situation, creative director Mac Walters says that “They both exist in the game world at the same time. If you’re playing as the female Ryder, your brother is out there somewhere in the universe.”

Does that mean we’ll be seeking him out? The first half or so of the story being focused on finding out what happened to our opposite number and recruiting them into the fold? Then the second half going after good ol’ dad’s legacy? Throw in a couple of progenitor relics and you’ve got some premium sci-fi nonsense on your hands.

Bioware, of course, usually take a turn for the unpredictable. I’m suppressing the part of my mind screaming “what if it’s like Divinity: Original Sin’s co-op” in fear of derailing the hype train from overload, but that’s the sort of angle I can imagine them taking. And let’s not even start on the romance option mod debates we’re going to be having from now until the heat death of the universe.

Walters also points out it’s all in-game footage, but has been cut together specifically, hence the lack of dialogue or action choices. They’re highlighting the environment and characters, but it is a part of a level that will be in the final game – still due sometime at the start of 2017. Hurry up, eh?

Thanks, EG.
