James Franco is bringing us a TV drama about the making of Doom

A Masters of Doom TV series is on the way

In 2003, author David Kushner published Masters of Doom, an account of the early days of id Software and the making of the original Doom. Now, that book is getting adapted into a TV drama courtesy of Ramona Films, the production company helmed by James and Dave Franco. A pilot has been ordered by the USA Network – the first of 2019’s cycle for the station.

Masters of Doom is likely to be an anthology series, as Deadline reports, starting with an adaptation of Kushner’s book. The series will be written and executive produced by Tom Bissell, who has written for Gears of War, Battlefield, and Uncharted games in the past. Bissell also wrote Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter, and The Disaster Artist – the book Franco’s film of the same title is based on.

As Deadline describes the plot, “Masters of Doom is the true story of two computer geniuses in an obscure corner of America who, along with a group of rebellious misfits, created one of the biggest franchise hits of the 90s, the video game Doom. John Carmack and John Romero were best friends who became bitter rivals, as they created a videogame empire and transformed pop culture forever.”

USA Network believes that the show will fit into its wheelhouse of stories about big American characters. If the pilot is picked up, expect to hear much more on the series soon.
