MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries now has ray tracing

The explosions should look prettier in MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries now that RTX-powered ray traced lighting has been added

Get ready to apply your glossiest paint job to that Atlas in the garage: MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries has added ray-traced lighting and shadow effects, so the explosions and laser beams ought to glow even more brightly – as long as you’ve got the hardware to run it.

Piranha Games says it’s ‘turned on’ Nvidia RTX-powered ray tracing in MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries in the latest patch, and it’s currently in a beta state. The patch, which updates Mercenaries to version 1.0.233, includes several RTX-specific options. You can enable ray tracing, DLSS, and set the quality of ray-traced shadows and reflections. DLSS can be set to optimise for quality, performance, or to strike a balance between the two.

Piranha says the patch updates Mercenaries’ DLSS implementation, so you may see some performance improvement if you’re using DLSS for upscaling from a lower resolution than the one you’re using to play the game.

The patch also includes updates to the MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries editor. This part of the patch is primarily addressed at modders, and it fixes a problem that was causing packaging errors when users were hot-loading mod assets in the editor. The community had found a workaround for the problem, but the new patch should mean that this won’t be necessary any more.

Since the patch was initially deployed, Piranha has also pushed out a hotfix that should correct a bug that was giving some players a DirectX 12 error during the initial install. That shouldn’t be an issue any more, so head back in there and get the lance back together.
