Starship Troopers: Continuum has just been revealed, and not only is it the first-ever VR game for the franchise, but Casper Van Dien is returning to voice the iconic Johnny Rico.
Coming to the Meta Quest 3, 2, and PSVR 2, Starship Troopers: Continuum is an entirely new story set 25 years after the events of the first film. A co-op shooter at heart, Continuum will still have plenty of single-player gameplay for solo commandos to enjoy.
As excited as I am to see the return of Johnny Rico, he will not be the character you control. Instead, you’ll play as a PsyCommander, a soldier with access to upgradable psychic powers in addition to traditional bug-blasting firearms.
Speaking on his involvement and the character of which we take control, Casper Van Dien has this to say: “In Starship Troopers: Continuum, Rico’s a figurehead for FedNet’s ‘Klendathu 25’ celebration. I’m helping recruit new meat for the grinder, and you’re the meat. You play Mobile Infantry Troopers as they battle the opposing Arachnid force. Thousands will die on both sides. You’re disposable. Mobile Infantry does the dying, and that’s what this game is all about.”
Continuum is the latest in a recent string of Starship Trooper game releases joining Extermination and Teran Command. It’s also worth mentioning the unavoidable success of Helldivers 2, which is heavily inspired by the original 1997 movie.
There is already some trepidation among the VR community, however, as developer XR Games is accused of mishandling the recent release of Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded, which was considered a disaster at launch. Despite the issues, the studio is aiming to fix the game with regular and frequent updates.
Starship Troopers: Continuum will be released on October 17 for Meta Quest headsets and on October 31 for PSVR2. Despite the trailer stating that footage was captured on PC, no Steam release is planned according to UploadVR who confirmed this with XR Games.
If the tone and feel of Starship Troopers translate to VR as well as I believe they can, then Continuum should be among the best Meta Quest 3 games you can play, both solo and in co-op. If you’re keen to play this game but don’t yet own one of the best VR headsets, it might be worth waiting for the Meta Quest 3S release date later this month.
