Mojang’s Jen Bergensten has said that future versions Minecraft will include consequences for players who kill the dim-witted villagers inhabiting the world.
Currently attacking the villagers has little effect – they’re knocked back but they don’t run or defend themselves – nor does it offer anything to gain, as they don’t drop items when they die. So, killing a villager is only an expression of wanton violence.
In a tweet, Bergensten said:
Used to kill villagers because you don’t like what they offer? Well, in the future you will have to face the consequences of your actions— Jens Bergensten (@jeb_) August 6, 2012
He offers no further hints as to what those consequences will be. Will your little Minecraft hands been marred with unwashable spots of blood? Will you be haunted by Minecraft-Marley’s ghost? Will you become the target of furies who chase you across the land in a recreation of a trilogy of Greek tragedies, ending in a trial for the sanctity ofyour very soul?Time will tell.
