Mount & Blade: Warband is a medieval simulator, an action RPG, a strategy game where you command an army of heroes, of mercenaries or maybe of monsters. It’s a game where you can be a brigand, a lord, a famed jouster or a penny-pinching merchant. It’s lots of different things and most of them are great, which is why I included it in my list of the 15 best RPGs on PC.
And for this weekend, it’s completely free on Steam.
From now until 10am PST on Monday, you can faff around in the medieval fantasy world, or maybe play with the many, many overhaul mods than transform the game into a Star Wars RPG, a historical adventure or a Warhammer total conversion.
These days, it’s got Steam Workshop support, so it won’t be difficult to find a mod that tickles your fancy.
If you find that you like it rather a lot, the good news is that it’s also on sale. Until July 14th, you can grab it for £3.74/$4.99 or get the complete pack for £6.24/$8.74. You’re better off just sticking with Warband though. The original game is fine, but Warband adds so much more, and the Fire & Sword expansion, while adding stuff like guns, isn’t great and doesn’t do anything not already achieved by mods.
The Napoleonic DLC might be a worth a look, though, but it’s only multiplayer.
